Since March of 2011 when Michigan added the 2D barcode, every drivers license in the US and Canada has a PDF417 2D Barcode. Since that time several states which had both the magnetic stripe and barcode have dropped the magnetic stripe. There are only 17 states with both a magnetic and barcode on the drivers license and the only reason states keep the magnetic stripe on the drivers license is to support retailers in their state which have magnetic card readers. The barcode is a superior machine readable data stripe technology which is why states have moved away from the magnetic stripe. **Q: Is the device capable of connecting with a database to determine if the person is on the no fly list or other security database?** A: The no-fly list is not public and searchable only by the Department of Homeland Security.
