So I'll answer both. Unfortunately, the smallest spool is 2mm and includes a size every number up to 10mm. The holes on the spools to thread the wire grows slightly larger as the rods get larger, so the smallest rod won't fit a wire larger than about .5mm/25gauge through it. But the largest 10mm will fit up to 1.8mm/15gauge. And I've personally made coils from wires ranging 1.6mm/16gauge to .45mm/26 gauge. **Q: Can i use this without mounting it to a table??** A: You *could*, but it's a bit awkward to use that way. Mounting it to a table (or holding the base in a table vise) leaves one hand free to guide the wire to be sure the tension is even, and the other hand to turn the handle. **Q: Can you use other mandrels with this or only the ones that come with it?** A: You can use anything with this great little gizmo.
