Thanks.** A: It does not have a timer but one can readily attach to a timer and accomplish the same thing. This is a wonderful incubator that I use primarily for making yogurt. **Q: Does the lid have to be on for the machine to work, or can it be left off during use? Thanks.** A: While the proofer will function with the lid off, all the heat will escape so the temperature cannot be controlled and the electricity usage will be higher as the heater element will be on all the time.If you have an object that is taller than the proofer will allow with the lid fitted, you could use it with a heavy towel draped over the top to keep the warm air in but you would not be able to use the moisture tray without the towel getting damp. **Q: Would this work as a dehydrator?** A: In theory, yes, but not a very good one as you need air circulation to move the moist air.
