Review: Great Book of a Great Airplane - Thus far the best monograph on the AD/A-1 Skyraider in print, and a sterling exposition of the fact that the plane had a long and useful life long before its use in Vietnam. This volume's focus on the early model AD's from development up thru the Korean War, which has been sparsely handled in the aviation press until now, makes this book all that much more welcome. Mr. Ginter provides detailed diagrams and up close photographs of perfect clarity to satisfy even the most ardent fan of this great airplane. The added bonus of developmental unit and individual squadron histories, particularly of USMC deployment during and after Korea, only filled the work out to near perfection. Some might complain of the lack of color photos or profile drawings. I don't see this as a drawback, first because so many of the photos are from factory and maintenance manuals and records or contemporary archive sources which were most likely not in color originally, and second because that information is readily available elsewhere. (Hint for the fastidious: the airplanes were blue). If you are even a passing fan of this unique aircraft and are curious about many of it's earlier, otherwise scantily documented incarnations this is the book for you.
