One for books and such and one slightly smaller compartment for a change of cloths or paper spiral notebooks, etc. My son loves it. We also bought the matching lunch box. When it gets too dirty, I’ll throw it in the machine. Update: My son ended up using the backpack from Kinder to Second grade and it still looks brand new. No rip, tears or anything else negative happening. Only negative I can see is it might be a little kiddish for a third grader, therefore, we bought him another pack more age appropriate. Things change with Manufacturing and I’ve read some of the negative reviews. My son’s backpack came with the mesh side pocket but not the fancy fabric on the packs back straps.
