The instructions say to increase the heat level in 10 to 15 second increments, which I did not do. I put it in the microwave for about 2 minutes and it was uber hot. I would not advise. The warmth lasted for about 30 minutes are more. I placed another sleeping cap on top of it to maintain the warmth longer. I slept with in on over night and I was very pleased as the cap stayed in placed and no liquid dripped down my neck.
