Chinua Achebe's novel is conceived as a tragedy in the classic form: a powerful man is destroyed due to a fatal flaw in his character. In the case of the novel's protagonist, Okonkwo, the hero offends against female deities and, because he does not wish to be perceived as "womanish," behaves in a cruel fashion -- these defects in his character isolate him from the community and, ultimately, result in his doom. Achebe's novel also recounts the effects of Christianity on the tribal village that is Okonwko's home. This aspect of the novel is incidental to its tragic theme and not completely integrated into the narrative -- it seems an afterthought. However, Achebe's portrait of a culture changing under the influence of European ideas, and, particularly, Christian missionaries is nuanced, judicious, and surprisingly evenhanded.

This was a very good read. I will have to read it again. I appreciate the author so much. I remember connecting the story to so many cool things in life. I'll have to see how those things connect later as well or if there is more to see!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This has to be the worlds most boring books. It was needed for my class though so I can't really complain.
