    Get the angle right.

The stones come with no directions, no plastic angle guide and no bamboo base.  All of that stuff seems like it would be superfluous.  You can find lots of directions on YouTube, and they are worth watching.  Here's what I saw no one else explain....  I wet only the side of the stone that I plan to immediately use by submerging it half-way in water for about 3 minutes.  After that, it is easy to keep it wet while in use.  I find it easiest to brace the short end of the stone on the counter against the left outside edge of my sink.  I switch my stance from left to right to push or pull the blade against the stone, always towards the sink.  The straight sides of most of my knives have about a ½"-wide bevel above the edge.  Lay the bevel flat on the stone and feel its position.  Then just raise the back of the blade a little bit to sharpen the edge without scratching the bevel too much.  Practice makes perfect.  This stone is a great value at $13.

    All you really need for kitchen knives

This is the first time I've used a whetstone - and I don't know why I never had one. I've been cooking for thirty years. I've always used the drag through style sharpeners. I watched a few instructional videos on YouTube and gave it a shot. It takes a little practice. I made a mess of the first knife I tried. Luckily I had the sense to use one I didn't care too much about. After a few more tries I was getting pretty good results. WAY better than anything a drag through sharpener can do. I was able to cut a mushy grape tomato into six slices. Very cool. I don't really know what you get when you spend more on a whetstone. This does the job quite well.
