Review: Works well in its price range - I've done a lot of cutting with it now. Nothing broken. Just grade 2 hardware so don't over tighten. The way these are designed they don't need a lot of force for the clamp points to hold solid. The biggest difference between these and the more expensive brands is getting the wrench on the nuts for adjustments. Bar clamp bolts should come up from the bottom but the go down from the top. Makes it rather clumsy to get on and off the bar if you don't want to mess with your thickness setting. The scrench is hard to get on the u-bolt nuts. Gotta have some patience when using it. But still very handy and very functional. I've cut a lot of board foot with it on a 55cc saw. Takes about 5-7 minutes for an 8 foot cut 14 inches wide. With a 20 inch bar the max with cut is about 15 inches of you clamp on the bar tip sproket rivets. Otherwise only about 13 inch wide max cut if clamped to solid bar material with a 20 inch bar. Hope this helps your purchase decision. If you're contemplating whether you should get it or not, this is your sign telling you, you should. Happy cutting!
Review: Functions nearly the same as a brand name mill for a fraction of the cost. - I bought this mill to process red and yellow cedar logs that wash up on the beach where I live. I have used a Granberg mill extensively in the past, and am familiar with that system. This mill very nearly the exact same, just with slightly lower machining tolerances. Considering the lower cost, and the fact that the kit includes the first cut rails, I would say unequivocally that this is a bargain. The kit comes entirely disassembled and with basic instructions. This is such a simple tool, that just a single picture would really be sufficient to assemble it. The mill and the rails were in separate boxes. The mill came with a pleasing quantity of spare hardware! Chainsaw milling in inherently conducive to needing spare hardware. Lots of vibration and a big pile of sawdust. That being said, the rails came with no such spare hardware, and I would highly reccomend tracking some down, especially if the location you intend to mill at is far from a hardware store. All of the nuts are a 13mm (the narrow end of a chainsaw too) this is decidedly convenient. On to performance. So far I have milled about 1500 board feet with this setup. It is showing signs of wear, but I would say that overall I am impressed. I paired this with a Stihl MS 462 with a 32" guidebar. For milling softer wood like cedar or spruce this is a pretty good combination. As long as you keep your chain very sharp, the saw pulls itself through the log. Very little pushing required. If you ever have to push, stop, back out, sharpen, and try again. Overall it takes far less time to sharpen than it does to fight a dull chain. (Not to mention gas and bar oil) After weeks of use, the threads on the u bolts that pin the mill to its depth adjustment are beginning to wear. I expect I will have to replace them soon. Also, it would be an improvement to the design if there were a spacer to make the nuts on these bolts stand out further to make adjusting the depth easier. It is just slightly harder than it should be to get a tool on them where they are. I added a shameful stack of washers to aid this, and it did work. Parts of this mill were not amply engineered to withstand the vibration of a large chainsaw. The wing nuts that set the top bar on the mill rattle loose constantly. I taped them. One could also dope the threads. Simmilarly, the standoffs that balance the first cut rails to the log tend to vibrate upwards. They then block the mill and cause confusion. (What am I fighting!? ...oh, there is a bolt keeping the mill from moving forwards) Also, the plexiglass sawdust shield has cracked around all of its bolts due to vibration. It is important to note that this part is not required, and even the instructions state that you can just not use it. That being said, some rubber washers might make it last longer. All things considered, buy this mill. It is a solid purchase and does exactly what it is made to do.
