Written and directed by Italy's Pappi Corsicato, the film details the Brooklyn-born Schnabel's formative years in Brownsville, Texas; the beginning of his professional career in New York City in the late Seventies; and his Eighties rise to superstar status in Manhattan's art scene as well as international acclaim as a leading figure in the Neo-Expressionism movement. In the 80s I was not much of a fan but this film has changed my mind. Here is another case of self promotion and marketing a personality. It would be a wonderful world if talent was enough. Since Warhol it has been necessary for artists to double as their own ad agency. Schnabel is a perfect example of such a personality..plate paintings and PJs got him the spotlight as an artist. It should be noted that all of his movies have been equally accomplished. Don't miss them.. What I came away with was being permanently impressed by Schnabel's level of intensity and intention to being an artist. I can't even recall why he fell in and out of favor in that shallow world.
