The CIPP text book - is really that - it's a text book - it has details and minutiae with references to research if you wanted to learn about a specific topic. This book by John Watts, however, is a study guide. It summarizes the four topical areas - tells you which ones to focus on. he has tips on the terms to learn on the glossary that is published by IAPP. There is a ton of practice test questions - with explanations on the answers - which teaches you the concepts. This is a must have in order to pass the CIPP foundation exam. I do have to warn you that there are some obvious typos (e.g. FRCA - should be FCRA) - but overlook those, because you know they are typos (does not cause any confusion on the concepts you need to learn) - this study guide is worth every penny! ### ⭐⭐⭐ 3.0 out of 5 stars Useful, but not as the sole resource *by S***. on Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2018* Passing the CIPP/US is fairly difficult and requires serious study. This book has some useful content, but no longer 100% covers the CIPP/US exam, likely due to revisions in the actual test vs. this book being updated. The test practice sections are useful, but again are fairly simple vs. the current test. Use this as part of the process, but you MUST use the Swire text from the IAPP as the main reference for this certification - and also make sure you cross reference the Body of Knowledge docs from the IAPP site. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.0 out of 5 stars The US portion of the book was very useful. Note, this book isn't a self-contained study aid - it serves more as a tutor with directions on what to review, research, know. This is why I gave it four stars (I deducted a star because the book isn't entirely clear that the IAPP certification process has changed and much of the data on "foundations" isn't necessary). Each chapter addresses a different topic covered on the CIPP exam and where to look on the IAPP website for more information & definitions. The questions are spot on. The answers provided are helpful, albeit you may wish to use IAPP's guides to supplement. Note for lawyers: unlike real life where lawyers would commit malpractice if they relied on memory for key dates and/or code specifics - the IAPP exam requires you to memorize every detail. So memorize, memorize, memorize. The upside, I everything I memorized for the exam was useful in real life (unlike the bar exam). As an aside, I found taking the CIPP exam in a paper format (as opposed to on a computer) a lot easier. If you like paper too, opt to take the exam at a conference instead of at a testing center. Best of luck - and welcome to privacy - a great profession that keeps improving because it values collaboration over litigation.
