The story is a tragedy of Shakespearian proportions, telling of how Umrao is snatched from her parents and sold as a courtesan and how her search for love is thwarted at every turn. It has music, but the story doesn't stop as the songs and dance are part of Umrao's role as an entertainer to her wealthy clients. And it has great acting, as Rekha won the Indian Oscar (National Film Award) for her portrayal of a tragic heroine of Indian literature ... It's something far better than the typical Bollywood crowd-pleaser, but it's much more accessible than, say, Satyajit Ray's arthouse offerings.
