The Student Book without answers is principally designed for classroom teaching, and many of its exercises are meant for pairs of students or groups. It is less suitable for individual self-study. The course content includes eight units, each based around one theme. Each unit contains exercises related to the four papers of the IELTS exam, guidance on how best to approach different types of question and exercises on each type. It also contains additional exercises on grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation and reference sections on the Writing and Speaking tests and Language (grammar, idioms and a word list).Overall, the book forms a complete IELTS course which should enable ESOL teachers to prepare students with a reasonable level of English to achieve overall scores up to Band 7.5. The units are set out in a progressive manner, so that those starting the course gain and improve their skills and are gradually introduced to more difficult topics as they proceed. The language used in explanations is appropriate, so students with reasonable English should have no difficulty in understanding it, if working by themselves.Apart from its good points there are a few negatives. Although it reasonably well produced and generally well-illustrated, its formatting can be cramped and unhelpful. Reading texts are often split between two non-facing pages which can make it difficult for students to follow and there is sometimes little space for answers. The book is not cheap so it deserves a better lay-out.Apart from these points, this is a useful programme of IELTS study, which should meet its objective of helping students to gain the grades they need.
