It filters out over 99.99% of the light from the sun, making it safe to use to photograph the sun. **Q: Why does this look light gray in one product photo and black in another product photo?** A: I own two of these filters, one purchased in 2017 direct from the manufacturer and one in 2021 from Amazon. They are both silver on one side (the side toward the subject) and black on the other (the side toward the interior of the lens). As indicated in the product description the filters are a film, not glass. I looked at the two product photos and they are both of the silver side. But notice that they are two different filters (based on thread diameter shown). So I suspect that the difference is in the reflected ambient scene since the filters are photographed at slightly different angles and may have even been photographed at different times.
