Compartments inside make it very spacious. There's one that can fit my laptop (15 inch Thinkpad) and three other mini pockets on the sides of the interior that fits my phone, pouches and sunglasses etc...The main interior space is quiet big and tall enough for several textbooks and a winter coat! So it would definitely work perfect for hiking and travel as well. I've been using it every day for class now, and it's held up extremely well. Even though it can carry a lot of stuff in it, the padding of the straps and back prevent it from being uncomfortable or painful to my arms or shoulders.
