Was replacing our should-have-been-replaced-long-ago original smoke detectors and got 2 of these--one for the basement and one for upstairs. The voice feature seems to be a gimmick until you realize if the alarm does go off, the voice announcement will make it much easier to know if you have a fire or a CO alarm. The detectors I was replacing were Firex with a different quick-connect. There are adapters available and I did use those. Unfortunately, those adapters were made to go vertically into the back of the detector, and on these particular ones the connector kind of nestles in horizontally. However... a few snips to remove some excess plastic and the connectors worked fine. The other 5 detectors I replaced were Kidde smoke (not CO) detectors. When pressing the test button on those, these detectors would also go off and announce "fire!". So interoperability within the Kidde family seems to work fine. Yay! Note that these have a permanent 10-year battery and at the end of 10 years (apparently which is tracked via a timer?) the alarm will start going off at 30 second intervals, requiring you to remove it and permanently disable it to drain the battery and shut it up. Again, having had these up for days, not 10 years, I can't say for sure exactly how that works. And most detectors these days, even some with replacable batteries, apparently will similarly self-expire after 10 years. To be fair that may be good: when I replaced the ~20 year old detectors, some would barely beep when tested, and a few had batteries that apparently had expired without any notification to us. These are an incredible value for how long they last. ### ⭐ False alarm due to spiders *by J***S on September 20, 2026* False alarms with spiders. I installed multiple alarms in two different houses in May of this year. Then while away on vacation the alarms went off multiple times in a weeks in one house. Luckily I was able to silence them via the Ring App, but I had to disable do not disturb on my phone and keep the volume high so I won’t missed it in the middle of night. Didn’t want Ring to dispatch fire trucks to my house. Pretty much ruined my vacation. When I came back home, I had to uninstall all alarms and that seemed to work. But few weeks later the same thing happened at another house. This time I was able to isolate the failed alarm and silence it. But while reaching for the rest button, a small spider crawled out and back into the sensor hole. I quickly removed the alarm and bagged it with a plastic bag. Also these alarms should work even if not connected to the ring app but some would chirp. After doing a thorough research, I decided to removed all alarms and replaced with traditional models where the sensor hole is smaller therefore maybe won’t attract bugs easily. Couple of other I’ve learned is that new houses by code may require you to keep all alarms under the same brand. Also home insurance companies may possibly delay or deny your claim if smoke alarms are not all the same brand.
