## Overview

Sensorimotor Psychotherapy: Interventions for Trauma and Attachment is a groundbreaking guide that emphasizes the body’s role in trauma recovery. Combining neuroscience, mindfulness, and somatic therapy, it offers therapists and clients a structured, phase-based approach with practical worksheets to unlock deep healing beyond traditional talk therapy. Highly rated and recognized as a leading resource in clinical psychology, this book pioneers a holistic path to emotional and cognitive transformation.

## Description

The body’s intelligence is largely an untapped resource in psychotherapy, yet the story told by the “somatic narrative”-- gesture, posture, prosody, facial expressions, eye gaze, and movement -- is arguably more significant than the story told by the words. The language of the body communicates implicit meanings and reveals the legacy of trauma and of early or forgotten dynamics with attachment figures. To omit the body as a target of therapeutic action is an unfortunate oversight that deprives clients of a vital avenue of self-knowledge and change. Written for therapists and clients to explore together in therapy, this book is a practical guide to the language of the body. It begins with a section that orients therapists and clients to the volume and how to use it, followed by an overview of the role of the brain and the use of mindfulness. The last three sections are organized according to a phase approach to therapy: developing personal resources, particularly somatic ones utilizing a bottom-up, somatic approach to memory exploring the impact of attachment on procedural learning, emotional biases, and cognitive distortions. Each chapter is accompanied by a guide to help therapists apply the chapter’s teachings in clinical practice and by worksheets to help clients integrate the material on a personal level. The concepts, interventions, and worksheets introduced in this book are designed as an adjunct to, and in support of, other methods of treatment rather than as a stand-alone treatment or manualized approach. By drawing on the therapeutic relationship and adjusting interventions to the particular needs of each client, thoughtful attention to what is being spoken beneath the words through the body can heighten the intimacy of the therapist/client journey and help change take place more easily in the hidden recesses of the self.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Therapy like never before &Brilliantly put together & narrated.
*by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 26 August 2020*

The book which I listened to on audio is outstanding with excellent narration by Paul Brion - it helps therapists dissociative survivors/complex-trauma sufferers a deeper understanding of the physical/textual traumatic memories which are contained in our bodies and which deplete our lives in such profound ways. Talking to any therapist about the tragic narratives isn't sufficient to heal or process traumatic injuries rather the physical imprints of such injuries on our bodies is the subject of this great book - it wants to empower us through physical posture movements but only in ways that are safe for all of us especially important for survivors who have parts of themselves and long-held in rigid survivalist mechanisms and reluctant to see any other world because sadly there has only ever been trauma so play positive emotions explored in the last chapters can be so fraught so coming to a equality of purpose and working on slivers of traumatic memories whilst acknowleding that therapy is about risk and dealing with uneasy feelings. The book is very clearly laid out - what seems so complex at the start of listening to the book then becomes very translatable within the rest of the book. I really enjoyed listening to the book and came out of it very fulfilled - Way in front of just talking therapies because the enormity of the suffering is contained within our bodies and they are pleading for freedom.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sensorimotor therapy 'bible' - a surprisingly accessible read
*by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 22 November 2018*

This is a hefty tome of a book which I think must be the 'bible' of sensorimotor psychotherapy. That said I found it remarkably easy to dip into and read.I haven't attempted to read it cover to cover yet but instead have dived into various chapters which are clearly laid out with explanation of the exercises/worksheets that follow. It would be of interest to anyone who has experienced trauma [though you may want to work with a therapist for some of the work] and anyone who is working with people who've experienced trauma. The idea being to work through bottom-up processing - working through the body - as well as through top-down processing [which uses the thinking / pre frontal cortex of the brain]. Working through the body is deemed to be far more effective when working with trauma / PTSD etc.Working through the body might initially sound like a slightly wacky approach but the more I read about it the more convinced I am that this approach is more effective, and gives far greater hope of recovery, than a medicated/solely top-down approach.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Impressive
*by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 17 January 2018*

This is a really comprehensive, brave and honest tome. It accompanies the earlier publication Trauma and the Body: A Sensorimotor approach to Psychotherapy by Ogden, Minton and Pain in 2006. It has so much rich material for the Therapist and Therapy sessions.
