Firstly, it ships with a european power cable.. annoying, but can be worked around. After powering it up, the device finishes an “initializing” phase, and then immediately after, is stuck on a screen that says “Check Connection” without any possible physical interaction available with the device. Only way to progress the set up, is to connect via the UniFi application on your phone and discover the UDW through Bluetooth. This allows you do two things. 1: to pretend to configure “Advanced Settings” but it doesn’t actually change anything. 2: “Set Up Console Offline” which lets you name the device, name the SSID, set the network password, and set the admin password. Once you do all that, the app will prompt you the message {Allow “UniFi” to connect to “[whatever you named the SSID]”} which fails, and then the bluetooth connect disappears entirely. The only thing that changes now, is that the UDW finally shows the proper UI on the LCD screen. From there, you can check to see the MAC address and see that there is no WAN or IP address, and then you can also change the brightness, turn off the device, or reboot the device. There is nothing you can do to connect to the UDW at this point. There’s no way to get internet on it, or connect via ethernet, or anything. The only option you have now, is to use a needle or something very thin to access the Reset/Recovery mode button. If you hold the reset button for 15 seconds, the device will reboot and start that first initializing phase and eventually get stuck on that “Check Connection” screen. Now you can see the device on the UniFi phone app via Bluetooth.. but there’s nothing you can do to change the outcome. I was on with tech support for several hours, troubleshooting every possible fix. Nothing works. They told me to try everything again, and if it doesn’t work, to put in a request for a replacement, as it might just be some weird hardware issue.. it’s really disappointing.. Such an expensive and powerful machine, and there were several issues with the shipping process as well.. it’s painful that I’ll have to go through even more hassle to get my network set up.
