The bottoms are not tapered, I would have preferred them to be a little tapered. They are roomy through the legs but not baggy. I wear a size 32 and wear a 32 in these. They are great because they flex from waist down to the cuffs. I have 4 pairs of them. I wear a 36" waist in most pants such as say Carhartt jeans or Columbia nylon pants, and while the Lee pants did fit in that size, they were just way too loose. I normally never need a belt in any pants, but these almost beg for one because the weight of my phone and wallet almost pull my pants down. On a hunch, I ordered a 34" waist pair, same 32" length, and they fit so much better! Just the way I want them. A waist size down also narrows the hips and legs, so the pants fit more modern without being skinny tight. Think Italian fit about 10 years ago prior to the skinny pants style came into vogue. Having said that, they are a little snug in the crotch as well, one size down, but not enough to be an issue. So, if you want your pants loose and sort of relaxed fit and prefer a belt, order the normal waist. If you want your pants to fit closer to the body and still have a nice, classic look, order a waist size down.
