The tether should be mounted at least 3 feet above the deck, so that it is out of the way when you swim. I have lost 12 pounds in just a few weeks! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works, but NOT like regular swimming *by D***M on April 13, 2020* I've used this about eight times so I can review its' function. Using this item does work. This particular equipment is functional and seems to be of pretty good quality, including the belt and bungee cord. The belt adjusts easily and is reasonably comfortable with no pinching. The buckle seems to work flawlessly. It is true, as other reviewers noted, that if you tie it off at any distance from the edge of the pool, you will need to attach a longer cord. I did that once and it seemed to work ok. So, my 4 star rating is mostly based upon the functionality of this item. However, for those who have never swam in place...and I imagine it is most people considering this item or a similar one.... it is NOT like regular swimming. Here are three differences that I have noticed. 1) The most important difference is it is HARDER. In swimming laps, you glide along the top of the water. With this you are working against the bungee cord that is constantly pulling you back. So, you ARE working harder than regular swimming. So, if you are used to swimming laps. don't be surprised you can't go as long before. I've had to adjust my times and I'm now beginning to get used to it. 2) As someone else noted here, the cord tends to pull your legs and feet under water. You may find yourself, more or less, using you legs and feet not for swimming but for trying to stay afloat or maintaining your floating posture on top of the water. Again, more work. You can sometimes find a few seconds of balance to actually kick your feet like normal swimming, but I can't do it for long. I find myself using my legs to bring my lower body back up to the top of the water. Someone also said if you tie the stationary end up high, it will help this issue. I tried it two feet higher than usual, which is about one foot above the water, but the extra two feet didn't seem to help much. But, maybe it is more beneficial if it is up, say five or six feet. Keep this in mind, when you try it out. 3) Finally, during normal swimming, the bubbles you breath out flow past you and your goggles or mask. In swimming in place, the bubbles come right up in your face. I admit this is not as significant difference as the previous two, but it can be annoying or at least distracting to some degree. Also, my goggles seem to cloud up more often, and I wonder if the bubbles have anything to do with it (?) In summary, this item seems to be well made and it is functional. It will allow you to swim in place. However, be aware swimming in place is different from normal swimming, and, in fact, is harder. I image using one of the expensive swimming machines that generates a current to swim against might be a little harder too since you are working against the flow.
