Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) causes potassium loss, as does long fast or severe diarrhoea. Potassium salts are found in both inorganic and organic forms. The inorganic forms are the sulphate, chloride, oxide and carbonate. The organic forms are the gluconate, citrate and fumarate. The best supplementation is organic form tablets, usually potassium gluconate, and they are in dosages of approximately 500mg. Other good methods of potassium supplementation are using mineral replacement drinks in the form of Potassium Chloride. Do not use Potassium Phosphate as a source of potassium, it is not used for that, it is used as a source of phosphate. The enemies of potassium are alcohol, coffee, sugar, and diuretics. If you drink large amounts of coffee, you might find that the fatigue you are suffering from is due to potassium loss. Heavy drinkers and those with a sweet tooth should be aware that their potassium levels are probably low. If you have low blood sugar, you are probably losing potassium, whilst retaining water. If you take a diuretic, you will lose even more potassium. It is important for competing bodybuilders on diuretics to supplement with potassium. Losing weight on a low carbohydrate diet might not be the only thing you lose. The chances are that potassium level is down, especially if the dieting is prolonged. Watch out for weakness and poor reflexes.
