Normally they are placed behind the LCD and emit white light from below. These LEDs are available separately and really cool! Each LED is encased in a 3.5 mm thick acrylic strip. The acrylic strip is a special kind of light that is very good in diffusion lighting, although only one white LED is present, it provides almost even illumination. The other smooth side of the strip has a reflector, so you only get light from above (otherwise the backlight would lose 1/2 of the brightness unnecessarily). Treat this backlight just like an LED, illuminated with ~ 3 V at 20 mA current and you get a beautiful shape that you can mask with vinyl or draw with a marker. With gel to change colour.
