If You Don't Buy 'Buzz' 'You'll Be Sorry'!

*by D***R on Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2011*

First of all my US friends I recommend you buy the UK/European edition of 'Buzz'. It has a far superior tracklisting when compared to the US edition (sadly). My review relates entirely to the UK edition which I do recommend you buy as it is the BEST of all versions of 'Buzz'.'Buzz' is the by far the BEST of all 'Steps' three studio albums. It has been my favourite since it's release in 2000 and I still play it on a almost daily basis and it reminds me what 'Masters Of The Scene' in UK Pop that Steps were and look like becoming again on the wave of their 3rd No.1 album 'The Ultimate Collection' for which they have my congratulations.'Buzz' contains 15 tracks. Twelve of these are 'Steptacular'. These include six Top 5 singles which were released from Dec 1999 through to May 2001 and are an exceptional set of hits that contribute to the albums brilliance.Better The Devil You Know (No.4/1999)Summer Of Love (No.5/2000)It's The Way You Make Me Feel (No.2/2001)Stomp (No.1/2000)You'll Be Sorry (No.4/2001)Here And Now (No.4/2001)Of the remaining album tracks you will find the greatest 'Steps' album track EVER namely 'Paradise Lost'. It is very much a salute to Madonna's 'La Isla Bonita' or Gina G's 'Ti Amo' except it's ten times better with a far more emotional latino depth. Led by 'Claire Richards' in the first verse and taken over by 'Faye Tozer' in the second. It truly is an angelic recording. I'll never understand why it was never a single in it's own right but with the amount of great songs on 'Buzz'. It could so easily be a 'Greatest Hits' instead with 12 out of the 15 tracks on this album quality 'Hit Single Material'.Further recommended tracks include 'Never Get Over You' which is co-written and sung by Lisa Scott-Lee. It has that superior quality on a par with the best of their hits. 'Turn Around' likewise co written and sung by Lee Latchford-Evans in the first verse and sung by Faye Tozer in the second again is stamped with full quality pop and shows that Lee has the full vocal potential like of any of the other members given the right song. However the best track is saved to last in the form of 'If You Believe' co-written by Faye Tozer & Cyndi Lauper and sung by Faye only. This woman is truly is an amazing vocalist and this ballad fully shows her vocal talent to the utmost. If 'Paradise Lost' is the most amazing song NEVER to be a single then 'If You Believe' is the most amazing Steps ballad EVER and closes 'Buzz' with sheer class. There are 3 weak tracks on the album in my opinionLearn To Love Again (Sung and co written by H)Hand On Your Heart (Sung and co written by Claire Richard's)Wouldn't Hurt So BadHowever 12 superb tracks out of 15 is an excellent indicator of one of the best pop albums ever. I'm a 42 year old man by the way (31 when this album was released) and it sits proudly alongside the other 600 albums I have collected throughout my life but this is one pop classic to be treasured by all with a deep appreciation for Top Quality Pop. It can sit alongside ABBA in the same category and sit there proudly. However the great thing is each has their own individual sound and Steps is Steps and ABBA is ABBA but both have one thing in commons. That is the super quality of their pop, unseen and unmatched by any other group since. An essential purchase *****

STEPS, so sad to see you gone

*by R***Y on Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2004*

Okay so I am in America and STEPS have been the BIGGEST musical influence in my life. I think they may have been "manufactured" but they werre incredible nonetheless. The British version did have much better songs that were unfortuantely left off of the US version, and MARS AND VENUS sucked. Turn Around, Paradise Lost, Youll be sorry, and If you believe had to be the best songs Steps ever did. The American version of STEP ONE included Better The Devil You Know, a clever Kylie Minogue remake, that they did her justice. So that is why it is absent from the US version of Buzz. 1. Buzz - Okay, but can get boring. 3/5 2. It's the way you make me feel - Excellent song and video 5/5 3. Happy go lucky - They werent trying hard enough. 2/5 4. Mars and Venus - They might as well have made all crap tracks for US as this song dooms the album. 0/5 5. Stomp - Very catchy and Disco fun, but still lacks. 3/5 6. Here and now - I thought this was powerful, I love it 4/5 7. Summer of love - One of the best tracks on this CD. 5/5 8. Never get over you - Lisa flexes her songwriting skills and hits a homer on this song. I lok forward to her solo deal. 5/5 9. Woudlnt hurt so bad - I didnt like it at first but after a many listens it has grown to be one of the best on the CD. 4/5 10. Learn to love again - The only song I can actually enjoy H's voice. Best Song on CD. 5/5*** 11. Hand on your heart - Claire's attempt at songwriting goes fairly well with this ballad. 4/5. All in all i think theyd have done WAY better in the US if those tracks hadnt been omitted, and if theyre producers had actually put out a few bucks for promotion other than Disney. Putting an artist on Disney practically dooms them from normal music, Hilary Duff a HUGE exception.
