As long as part of the body under the alarm mat is touching the mat and putting pressure on the mat, it won't go off. When the body does not touch and put pressure on the alarm mat any longer, then it will go off. It is very important to put the alarm mat under the shoulders and upper part of the body. So that way the minute they sit up and lose contact with the alarm mat, it goes off! If the alarm goes off and they lay right back down, the alarm will stop until they sit up again and the body loses contact again with the alarm mat. Don't put the alarm mat under the lower part of the body. If you do that, they can basically be out of bed and risk falling before the alarm will sound. You want the alarm to immediately go off the minute they sit up in bed, so there is time to react and go check on them before they can move around and get out of bed and fall. So put the alarm mat under the upper part of the body, so the alarm will sound the minute they sit up. This works of course if the person is laying down in bed. I put my mother on her side with a pillow behind her back to keep her on her side, in a hospital bed with railings. When she rolls over to her back and then sits up in bed, the alarm goes off. **Q: In patient alarm or remote?** A: there is no remote.......you set the alarm, runs on 9 volt battery, alarm rings when person tries to get up and stops ringing when person gets back in position, if it keeps on ringing then you have to get up cause they are out of bed and walking around, great item **Q: How long of a delay is there until the alarm sounds?** A: The sensor pad of the bed alarm is pressure and weight-sensitive, and as soon as it detects changes in pressure or weight exerted on the sensor pad, the alarm sounds off. **Q: What happens if they urinate?
