I heated two kettles of water and dumped them them used a small amount of dish soap to wash it. I detected no machine oil or any foreign substance after cleaning. The thermometer at temperature is accurate when compared at 150°F to 212°F with my NSF kitchen thermometer. It is a bit off at the room temp end but that's typical, it's right on the money where I make my coffee and tea. Overall a very well worth the money addition for brewing tea and pour over coffee.
