I planted them as soon as the ground thawed and then there was another month of brutal cold. There was no growth for a long long time and I eventually gave up and planted an ornamental in the bed. Fast forward to end of June (right in the middle of a 3-week drought) and low-and-behold pencil size asparagus started popping up from every one of the crowns! Consistently for the rest of the summer new spears popped up fatter and fatter. By mid-September each plant had a good 10 stalks with the last to emerge as thick as my thumb.
