The object is to protect your body's core temp while still giving you range of arm motion. You also can hunker down, seated, and have it cover more of your lower body.The core-covering material is much sturdier than the usual mylar (it expands in thickness as it absorbs air) and it's reusable. As with all items like this: After opening/using it once you'll never be able to pack it down to a small brick again, but it's light and I repacked it to about 6" x 5" x 3".I haven't used it in a blizzard yet but tried it on and was superwarm almost immediately. Which is fine: I bought it expressly because I've had hypothermia in the past and I know that -- for me -- emergency blankets and bivies are limited. I needed something that I could stash in my vehicle or pack and that would provide good core coverage even if I were upright and walking. I haven't used this yet and don't plan to until I have a break-down in extreme cold. I know that we have all left home in comfortable clothing only to find later after a cold front came through that you didn't bring enough warm clothing.
