    Excellent Miter Lock Set

*by K***R on Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2015*

It's no secret that I am a fan of Yonico router bits, and the Yonico 15334 Lock Miter Set is no exception. This is a quality set that delivers crisp cuts for a good price. The Yonico 15334 Lock Miter Set is composed of the following individual router bits. Shown below is what would be the individual bit stock number, the size of stock with which it is intended to work and the price for that particular bit if purchased individually.Yonico #______Size_____Cost15129____=__ 1/2"_____$19.9515127____=___3/4"_____$24.9515122____=_____1"____$26.95____________Total_____$71.8515334 = set of 3 = $59.95As you can see above, it is definitely more economical to purchase the set than it is to buy them individually.I tested each of these bits on redwood, white pine and Baltic birch. Redwood and white pine worked great; I wasn't wild about the results from the Baltic birch as the top laminate layer chipped and tore away from the underlying layer.I am using a Bosch 1617EVS router mounted in a Bosch RA1171 table.I used the following RPM settings:15129 (1/2" bit @ 1-3/8" diameter)__RPM:__21,500_(Dial 5)15127 (3/4" bit @ 2" diameter)______RPM:__18,000_(Dial 3.5)15122 (1" bit @ 2-3/4" diameter)____RPM:__10,500_(Dial 1.5)I used the following tables to determine router speed.Precisionbits.comBit Diameter_____Maximum Speedup to 1"_________22,000 - 24,000 rpm1" - 2"__________18,000 - 22,000 rpm2" - 2-1/2"______12,000 - 16,000 rpm2-1/2" - 3-1/2"___8,000 - 12,000 rpmBosch 1617EVS Router Manual (p. 15)DIALSETTING___RPM______APPLICATION1________8,000_____Nonferrous metals,2_______13,500_____larger diameter bits,3_______16,500_____and cutters4_______20,000_____Softwoods, plastics,5_______21,500_____counter tops, smaller6_______25,000_____diameter bits, and cuttersLee Valley Tools has a fantastic series of router bit setup guides. I attempted to use "http://www.leevalley.com/en/shopping/Instructions.aspx?p=51601" for this particular setup.Use the smallest router table insert you can without making contact with the bit; when in doubt use the next biggest table insert. The diameter of the 1-inch (15122) Lock Miter bit in the Bosch RA1171 router table does not require any router table insert. I have yet to do so, but if you intend to cut a lot of these joints, making a zero-clearance fence will prove beneficial to preventing dig in. I was getting some dig in when either side of the stock became unsupported by the fence, so I made a quick right-angle fixture from some 1/2-inch Baltic birch plywood. The right-angle fixture and a couple of Irwin Tools' Quick Grip clamps solved that issue.Once I got the RPMs identified I enthusiastically chucked the 3/4-inch bit, set the bit height and fence depth according to the Lee Valley instructions, donned my Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and routed my first two pieces of 3/4-inch white pine. The cuts themselves were crisp and clean. That's where the joy ended. I concluded that it's my brain that must have some difficulty in visualizing which direction I needed to adjust the bit height or the fence depth, as I spent the next hour making adjustments to both bit height and fence depth and never getting a perfect fit. I even used the tips in the Lee Valley Lock Miter instructions. Resigning myself to my own inability to figure it out, I gave up and cleaned up. I had previously seen that some manufacturers designed setup blocks for their 45-degree miter lock bits, so I decided that I needed one as well. Note that other folks may have more experience at setting up their lock miter bits, or their spatial reasoning is better than mine, so your mileage may vary and you will likely get them set up the first time. After reading numerous reviews about various manufacturers' setup block (some reviewers flat out indicated that specific blocks did not work with the Yonico bits), I was about to despair at having spent money on bits I would never use. That's when I ran across a mention of Infinity Cutting Tools' Lock Miter Master. Fascinated by the prospect of a simple setup tool for the Lock Miter bit, I downloaded and read their PDF instructions; ..."seems too easy", I thought to myself. Then I looked at the price...YIKES! $55 for the pair of setup jigs seemed steep...very steep. I debated for a couple of days whether it was worth it to invest another $55 when I had already thrown down $60 for the set of bits. In the end I decided that if I was in for a penny, I was in for a pound. Wincing slightly as I pushed the "Add to Cart" button on Infinity Tools' site (no, it's not available on Amazon), I crossed my fingers and waited for the arrival of the Lock Miter Master jigs. The jigs arrived in three days and I rushed to my garage/woodshop/brewery to try them out. I can sum up the results in one word...WOW! Following the Miter Master instructions I had downloaded from the Infinity Cutting Tools website, I chucked the 3/4-inch lock miter bit and had it set up in less that 2 minutes. Essentially, you mark the center of the edge of the board using your favorite marking gauge, place the jig on the bit (it has a couple of rare earth magnets that hold it in place), align the horizontal mark to the mark you mark on the board to set the bit height, then clamp the same board to the fence and align the vertical mark to set the fence depth...done! I routed the rail and stile...BANG! First time PERFECT ccuracy. The joint was beautiful; I was so chuffed I went and showed the joint to me wife. I used the small jig on the 1/2-inch and 3/4-inch bits, and the large jig on the 1-inch bit. All joints were amazing. I even tried using a couple pieces of 5/8-inch redwood; again, perfect results regardless of wood thickness.Again, as they stand alone, the Yonico bits functioned exactly as they should; nice crisp, clean cuts that mated nicely. Most folks will be able to properly set up the bit without the extra jig from Infinity Cutting Tools; I, however, required extra help.

Good overall, Just a bit to work with

*by M***R on Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2021*

These are decent quality router bits, but they take a bit to setup. This doesn't have anything to do with the quality of the bits, but with using the bits. Any lock miter bit seems to take a lot to setup properly and some very fine tuning to get it to work.I was trying to use this for Wenge wood, and the wood just didn't hold up to the lock miter cutting the vertical cut. That was more an issue of the wood than the bits.Overall, decent bits. Not the highest quality, but not poor quality. Worked fine for basic hardwoods and softwoods.

    Yonico router bits

*by K***N on Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2011*

I recently purchased several Yonico bits for on going joinery and raised panel projects I have started. I was somewhat concerned of the quality of the bits because of the price. I found I did not have to be concerened. The bits work better than expected and I have nice clean smooth stile and rail joints and the lock miter joint bit is very good. I made perfect corners with a little set up practice on scrap of the same thickness. After getting the set up dialed in I made my own set up block for use in the future. The drawer lock bit worked equally as well and a molding profile bit cuts nice clean lines with no tear out or chatter. The stile and rail bit sets ( two different profiles) have both worked to create perfectly matched joints. I have tried all of these bits in pine and white or red oak with the same results.I will be buying more Yonico bits in the future and would recomend them to any of my freinds or other interested parties.Ken S
