The same stuff as the acoustic foams.** A: That's exactly what I use mine for. A couple years ago my next door neighbor gave me half a dozen 3'x6' boxes of tight closed cell foam. Been making custom cutouts for friends until I deplete my foam supply. But hot wire cutters are useful for many other tasks. I was already a big fan of Proxxon tools, their rotary tool makes Dremels look like toys. **Q: Will it cut polyurethane foam, the material a fun noodle is made of?** A: I'm pretty sure those pool noodles are made of polyethylene foam which is a thermoplastic. Since the cells are thin walled, a 360° cutter might work. Polyurethane is a thermoset material - and a hot wire might burn it's way through foamed urethane and not melt it as intended, but wouldn't be good for cutting planks or blocks of polyurethane. This would probably work best for polystyrene (and styrofoam), ABS plastic, low density polyethylene, and possibly thin low MW polypropylene. **Q: What fumes are generated by the cutter and/or foam? What ventilation are you recommending? This is to be used in a university studio classroom.** A: We use ours for 1/2 hour or so at a time and have no problem with fumes. There is very little noticeable smoke or odor. During a recent relocation, it appears to have been damaged (motherboard not working). I had little hope of making it work again for a reasonable price. I wrote to Proxxon realizing there's no way it's still under warranty, but asking if I could please purchase just the circuit board.They were SO helpful. They didn't have the board in stock, but offered me the entire control module (hidden underneath the bed) for the same price as the circuit board. This includes a huge transformer and wiring harnesses, etc. The price was very reasonable as was the shipping charge.As if that's not enough, when I forgot to phone in my payment info for a couple days (work distractions), their staff emailed and called me to remind me that it was packed and ready to ship if I would just phone them with CC info. I was very very pleased.===================================================================I want to say up front that cutting foam with a hot wire is not as simple a proposition as it might appear. There is a learning curve. You will break the wire occasionally. You will learn when to use higher temps and when not to, etc.Having said that, this device really helps you do as good a job as your skill level will allow.
