Review: Big Science Fun for Little Hands Educational & Engaging! - The Learning Resources Primary Science Lab is a favorite in our home, just like all their products. Designed specifically for young children, each piece is perfectly sized for little hands to grip and use independently. The kit includes real, functional tools beakers, test tubes, goggles, a magnifying glass and they’re all sturdy and easy to clean. What really sets this kit apart are the activity cards. They offer simple, guided experiments that help parents lead fun, hands-on learning without needing a science background. My child feels like a real scientist and stays engaged for long stretches, asking great questions along the way. It sparks curiosity, builds confidence, and supports STEM learning in a fun, age-appropriate way. We've used it both indoors and outside. Highly recommended for ages 3 to 7, especially if you're looking to make learning exciting and screen-free!
Review: Perfect starter set for preschoolers - This science set was lots of fun for my daycare kiddos. All of the instruments are just the right size for them to hold and manipulate and see through. They fight over the goggles, which are nicely designed for younger kids, durable and comfortable to wear. The surprise hit of the show was the dropper, which really is great for sucking up liquids and squirting them back out again. :) We actually already had a Learning Resources magnifying glass, and while there are many things the kids love about it - the size and weight and the little stand appeal -- unfortunately we haven't found ours (either of them) to work well. You can't really see anything through them. It's not a high-quality lens, at all. (It does stand up to two toddler boys using it as a baseball bat, though. But we couldn't see through it even prior to that, um, incident.) There is a nice set of ten laminated cards with experiments on them, but I'm honestly not sure how much value they add to the set. For one thing, the experiments are so simple (mixing food coloring, putting raisins in soda, dropping insects into the test tubes to observe them, growing plants in the test tube, mixing baking soda and vinegar to make a volcano, mixing colored water and vegetable oil) that you don't really need the cards to be able to perform them, and once you've done the experiments once, the cards are a little obsolete. We did most of the interesting experiments in a single afternoon, although the kids are all happy to repeat them and make up their own whenever I take out the large plastic tub where I've stored the kit and assorted supplies (food coloring, raisins, a can of soda, a bottle of vinegar, a box of baking soda - you will want some of this stuff on hand when the kit arrives.) Definitely a fun introduction to science.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What ingredients should I buy to give to my son with the kit?**
A: Depends a little on age, but the kit comes with nothing, so you should at least have a couple basics on hand: food coloring, salt, white vinegar, vegetable oil, lemon juice, clear liquid soap. You can google "chemistry for x year old" and get some more ideas. A lot has changed... My first chem set had 16 things that could kill you.

**Q: Could someone please tell me what experiment #5 is in this kit? Describe the idea please or take a photo. Ours came with two of #3 and none of #5.**
A: What's that smell is the titleYou will need two smaller beakers the larger beaker and the tweezersKey science concept is your sense of smell is one of your five sensesNumber one place one item to smell in each test tube.Number 2. ask a friend to sniff each test tubewithout looking. Can your friend correctly identify each smell?3 repeat this experiment with new smells.4 try pouring a bit of liquid like perfume or vanilla onto a cotton ball. Then, use the tweezers to drop the cotton ball into the test tubes 5 clean the test tubes well before reusing

**Q: My daughter is turning 8, is this set to "young" for her?**
A: I see she is now almost 11, but for others contemplating this question. I am sure there is nothing wrong with this kit for the 8 year old, and I'll bet the activities would be perfect for independent exploration (have received my order yet, so no promises) But...I am a science teacher and have taught science lab to grades K-8. My Kinder and grade one kiddos were perfectly capable of using the "regular" labware in class some pieces were even glass. Amazon has some great polypropylene lab ware (some that I ordered with this kit for a science teacher friend's 2 year old) that, along with a book of kitchen chemistry, would be a far better investment that will take your budding scientist into her middle school science fair years and beyond.

**Q: Is this suitable for a 7 yr old**
A: My son was three and a half when I got him this. He can't read the suggested experiments and he didn't really understand them. He had fun pouring colored water, ice etc from one container to another. I think for a 7-year old, he/she can definitely do all the suggested experiments and look up other actual experiments.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great Set For Young People!
*by L***M on May 12, 2012*

This set was the best gift I have purchased in a very long time! I would recommend this to anyone. It's extremely sturdy and safe while being tons of fun. My kids beg to 'do' science. (Even the 9 year old and her cousins get this set out all the time.) The volcano is hands-down the funnest, I would recommend buying white vinegar and baking soda in bulk at your local warehouse store for a TON of fun. One reviewer was disappointed that it wasn't a 'kit' and some 'ingredients' didn't come with it. (Even going so far as to say that you would have to spend $20 on items at a store.) The truth is that all the "Investigation" cards require simple (CHEAP) household ingredients. I don't know any households without; food coloring, baking soda, smelly things (cinnamon, coffee, etc), small objects for sink/float (coins, rocks, small cereal pieces), cooking oil, raisins, dull pennies, lemon juice and BUGS. What we DID have to buy was celery and clear soda. And coming up with seeds and some soil wasn't too difficult. Which wasn't so very hard (or expensive) to do. This is an investment that you won't regret and will be able to pass on when your kids are older!
