If your dogs nails are growing into the skin, then they are way overdue for a trimming. At this time- I would let the groomer do it. But in the future, just keep trimming those nails. SCARED** A: The quick safety guard sits flush against the back of the clippers and when used in place the clippers will only allow you to cut a maximum of 3mm off the nail. There are many dogs that don't like sitting still for their pedicures, we have found that if you place them on a table with a leash and maintain some pressure on the leash they are a little less squirmy. You can always try to bribe them with a treat as well so that they are focused on something else instead of the nail clipping. Dogs with black nails are undoubtedly tougher to cut as you can not easily see the quick, there are a couple of tricks that may help.Look at the underside of the nail and will see that towards the tip the nail separates into a triangular shape with two outer walls, typically that is where there is no quick and is ok to cut.Or another trick is if you drew an imaginary line across the pad of their paw and extend that line across the nail, line up your cut along that imaginary line instead of making the traditional 45 degree cut across the tip of the nail.Lastly, we always recommend that you make shallow cuts with dark nails, and use the included nail file to try and get them shorter to prevent hurting your dog. They are very versatile to use on either large breed or smaller breed, as I have a Golden Retriever all the way to Chihuahuas. The clippers were very sharp and cut very precisely without any ripped or torn edges. It comes with a very nice finishing file in which I enjoyed having for a few nails. It has a safety guard on the outside of the clipping edge that can either be swung to be in place to be used by you or swung away, for someone that is more exsperienced and that doesn't need it, or if your dogs nails are a bit too long. I appreciated how nice the rubber gripping felt in my hands as I worked with the clippers as it helped me get that perfect cut each time.
