Jim Burns is an artist from Wales and started his career in the 1970s. He's a sci-fi artist whose artworks have appeared on numerous covers and that is what he's probably most well known for doing. The Art of Jim Burns: Hyperluminal features a collection of artworks from Burns's career from the 70s to the recent years up to 2014. You'll see the book cover art he created for authors such as Peter F Hamilton, George R R Martin and many more. The artworks are reproduced huge in this coffee table book compared to the novels. Because of the size, you can see more clearly the amount of detail he puts in the paintings. He uses primarily acrylics, occasionally oils and also took up digital painting. The details and defined edges of his acrylics paintings are impressive. The artworks are credited to the books they are for, year and medium. The artworks are beautiful, well reproduced, particularly the ones painted with traditional medium. Digital ones still look digital though. Most are sci-fi, some fantasy, and a few surreal ones. The sci-fi worlds he creates are quite unlike those from other artists with his choice of colours, realism, details and design. They belong more to the traditional sci-fi art in those days as compared to the busy video game style concept art commonly seen nowadays.I've a minor quibble for page 110 where a face was cut into half by the page gutter.Overall, a good book for fans of his art.The Art of Jim Burns: Hyperluminal is another wonderful addition to the sci-fi artbooks that Titan Books have published in the recent years such as for Fred Gambino, John Harris and Chris Foss.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. On a hyperfine edge of wonder

Buy the damm thing already. Stop now and order a copy.Somewhat longer opinion: I own a number of books that have Jim Burns paintings as cover art, and have a copy of a previous collection, "Lightship". I was very excited to see a new collection being offered. Some works (perhaps two or three) were been in the earlier book, but the overwhelming majority is new: book covers, commissions, personal projects and experimentation.Burn's work is characterized by tremendous command of detail and form, colors explosive and vibrant, creating images that are at their *least* hyper-realistic scenes of futures so different from this world as to nearly be alien. This book is an embodiment of strangeness and wonder, windows to the fantastic. Each page is a story unto itself and can pull you in from a glance. There is writing in here, but I have no idea what it is about because I so quickly become inebriated by the imagery.Oversized, as have been most of Titan Books' recent offerings, so at least you now have additional reason to clear an extra-high shelf (get "The Art of John Harris" to keep this company, if you don't yet have a copy.) Which is, of course, a delight, because it gives more area to what lies within. The pictures themselves are a mix of traditional media (oil, acrylics, pencil) and computer. There is little difference in execution by which their origins might be told apart. Paper is heavy, printing wonderful, and a spine that is durable enough for the use of years. My only complaint about this book is that there isn't enough of it.

Does the cover look like Sophie, from GoT, or what? Artwork is very photo-like in it's depiction. Very good.
