That said, this will cost you $100-150 less than the equivalent.Pros:- It has a ratchet large-diameter thimble. I've always liked this style best. The smaller diameter end is solid, for quicker adjustment to different sizes.- It has automatic power off after 5 minutes of no use.- When adjusted while off, then turned on, it still holds position.- Set zero when it was warmer during the day, left it until the house had been cold for a while, then re-checked and it read 0.00005" off. For including a temp change, I think this is pretty good.- The vernier agrees with the digital readout for the full 1" travel.- It has an incremental mode that zeroes when activated. It's easy to switch, and does not affect absolute mode.- The body is quite hefty. It appears and feels a sturdy design.- The plastic housing is nice to help reduce heat transfer to the frame from your hand.- Comes with a spare battery.Cons:- The spindle lock hardly worked when I got it. Fortunately though, the lever can be pried off the spline of the locking screw with a flathead and the travel of the lock adjusted. This fixed the problem.- The shank of the spindle isn't the prettiest material. There's some very small, yet obvious pitting from inclusions in the steel. This does not include the carbide faces. They look fine.- It's not the smoothest spinning spindle. It's not that bad all in all, but a Starrett or Mitutoyo mic is definitely smoother.- It comes with a case, though a fairly basic one. It works fine though, and I wouldn't expect more for this price.- The ratchet is slightly coarse. Not too bad though.- It does come with the ball attachment for measuring from the inside of a bore. The ball, however, is off size. Instead of 0.2000", it measures way off at 0.1964". Using the ball in conjunction with incremental, though, makes this problem negligible. Just don't expect the ball to be exactly 0.2000".Other comments:- The weight should be noted. This thing weighs in at 10.5 ounces. That's just over 2/3 pounds. It's on the heavy side. This does mean it has plenty of "meat" in the frame and I like this much better than a very lightweight mic.- I haven't used the data function. I probably won't ever. Thus I have little to comment on it other than the port is under a plastic cover with rubber seal, and that cover is held on by 2 #0 phillips screws. It may be a pain removing and replacing it repeatedly.Summary: For $70, you probably can't get a better 0-1" micrometer. It's quality is not top, but high enough that I am no disappointed whatsoever. The real test is yet to come; that is using it for a few years in the shop. I'm confident that this will be good for precision mold making.[EDIT]After several months of use, this item is still working great. As you switch direction spinning the thimble, the digital reading has about .0001" backlash from the vernier. Not a very big deal since most of the time I'm measuring a part, but if I'm getting a measurement off a telescoping gauge, adjusting it back and forth to find the size, it can throw ya off a little bit. Not that a telescoping gauge is meant for better than .0001" tolerance anyway, so no big deal.[EDIT]After over a year of use, it is still working like new. As long as you take care of it like any other precision measuring tool, it's great.
