Seriously! They're not allowed to sell these vents in the U.S. with a provided screen, but they are allowed to do so in Canada. At least, that's what I was told when I drove to their U.S. factory in order to buy this particular vent (with its accompanying screen) directly from them. So, I went with a different design that does provide a snap-on bird screen. The vent that I chose instead of this particular one uses 4 plastic louvers for the seal, and has an optional 5 inch by 6 inch snap-over covering, (with 1/2 inch square openings comprising the grid) which makes up the front of this snap-over addition. If you need to modify this covering with an insect screen added to the existing 1/2 " square facing vinyl grid, I suppose that you could fasten an insect screen to the front of the plastic grill with "epoxy- made-for-plastic', available from any hardware store. Just remember, this is NOT UP TO CODE anywhere in the U.S. if it is to be used for a dryer exhaust. If it is, it'll clog almost instantly with lint, creating a huge fire hazard, so act accordingly. You can find these vinyl louvered vents with optional accessory grates on Amazon, and in many colors. Good luck. **Q: does cold air get in in the winter if you live near the Canada border in the northeast?** A: If properly installed that shouldn’t be a problem, the flap closes by gravity when no air is being vented out. All bets are off if you live far away from the border though, eh... **Q: How long does this extend into wall? 5"?** A: 9-5/8" **Q: Does anyone know how to create bug screen for this?** A: Yes, I made one pretty easy. Get a piece of bugscreen big enough for a quarter inch border around the opening. Mark the size of the opening and bend in the 1/4" tabs of the bug screen 90 degrees. Slip the bug screen in the opening and slide the tabs you made behind the tabs of the opening of the vent from the inside. You can pinch the folds of the vent tightly over the bug screen for a zero silicone/fastener install.
