## Overview

The Live Desert Ironclad Beetle (Asbolus verrucosus) is a hardy, low-maintenance insect native to the Sonoran desert, known for its striking powdery blue color that intensifies in low humidity. Measuring just under an inch, this beetle fascinates with its unique defense of feigning death. Ideal for educational purposes or as a captivating pet, it thrives in dry sandy environments without the need for water dishes, making it perfect for professionals seeking a low-effort yet intriguing companion.

## Description

The Beetles require little to no additional heat or humidity, and only require dry sand as substrate as well as something to hide in. They cannot climb on smooth surfaces (plastic or glass). No water dish is required, and they can be fed foods such as apples, carrots, dog and cat foods, and etc. Crickets or mealworms that have recently died can be given on occasion or other dead insects. They also like good quality raw hamburger meat in small amounts and grains. They are desert beetles, so the humidity should be kept low. In-fact, the color of the beetles is based on the relative humidity! Beetles living in a cage with higher humidity will turn a blackish color, while beetles that are kept in low humidity, are bright blue! A lower humidity means more colorful beetles. If the humidity is too high, the beetles will die. Blue death feigning beetles do alright at room temperature, but a higher temperature will encourage breeding. Overall, they should be kept between 70 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit, (21-30 degrees Celsius) and at a relative humidity of 0-20%.

Review: Simple, Fascinating, and a Little Dumb (or a lot!) - My little guy arrived just fine in a container packed with leaves and paper towels. I've had him for almost two years now and he seems to be going strong! Getting him to eat was a little tricky at first, but eventually he began eating pieces of apple after they dried out a bit. He also eats freeze-dried bloodworms (like the ones sold for Betta fish) and live superworms. Strangely, he seems to be nocturnal even though I've read that they're active during the day. I think it's because he prefers to be out when we humans are away, because for a time I was working on projects at night and sleeping during the day -- and he soon switched to being active during the day! He's great to take out and let crawl around, but be careful! They WILL march right off a cliff without hesitation if you let them. Don't use calcium sand or moist dirt in their container and be sure they can't use anything as a ladder to climb out. They're amazing climbers, even upside down!
Review: Great low maintenance pet! - I bought these as a birthday gift for my 5 year old daughter. She loves bugs. These did not disappoint! Came healthy and lively and well packaged. They played dead when I transferred them to another container which was cute but quickly rolled back over and went about their business. They don't bite and my daughter holds them a lot. Very easy to maintain! They don't have to have water and hardly ever eat from what I can see. Maybe they are sucking moisture out of the fruits and veggies that we feed them. They don't make a mess and their enclosure will hardly ever have to be cleaned. We recommend.

- Also known as the desert ironclad beetle or blue death feigning beetle is a species native to the deserts of the Southwestern United States, mainly the Sonoran desert. This beetle has been known to play dead when threatened. They are increasingly becoming popular due to their ease of care, hardiness, and longevity. You will receive (1) LIVE Desert Ironclad Beetle. (Scientific name: Asbolus verrucosus)
- The blue feigning death beetle grows around 18 to 21 mm (.71 to .83 inches) from head to abdomen. The powdery blue hue coloring the beetles is due to a wax secreted throughout their bodies that keeps them from losing moisture. Males are a tad bit smaller than females. Even though the majority of captive beetles are wild-caught, blue death feigning beetles suit very well in captivity, being common and even popular in zoos and insectariums.

**Q: Is it possible to request a male and female if one orders 2?**
A: Yes. The sellers are very nice and accommodating. I asked for a female and that’s what I got!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Cute healthy little guy
*by B***Y on February 16, 2023*

Love my little guy. He came in good packaging. And came with a heat pack to keep him warm which was unfortunately ice cold when I opened the box. Was a little worried at first since the temp was so cold and he wouldn’t move for about an hour. But he eventually came to and explored a bunch and ate his food. It was a bit more expensive then other places online which I didn’t notice until after the fact. But overall I’m happy. He’s super cute and looks healthy
