Most of the book seems built around research and interviews the author did and some sample set-ups. I thought the book would be more or less for the independent filmmaker who was looking to green screen, but many of the things he discusses are either for live shooting or very expensive, e.g. The Ultimatte, hardware for live green screening, and then he only touches on them. He also uses After Effects primarily, so if you are using another program, such as Hit Film or Vegas, the examples he does discuss might not apply. To be fair, he does have a short chapter title Simple Set-Ups On A Budget, but it, too, is pretty basic. For instance, he suggests building your own lights but then refers you to a website where some guy apparently explains how to do that. In addition, much space seems wasted on pictures instead of information. For instance, on page 90 there is a picture of tools you might use to build something, but the tools aren't explained and no step-by-step instructions are provided. Then again on page 98, the same picture, now taking up a full page, is shown with again no specifics other than a couple of passing comments and the author talking about someone else's instructions from that website.If you are looking for a quick and dirty overview of green screening in general, then I think this book is okay.But if you are on a low budget and want specific step-by-step guidance on doing basic green screen, especially in terms of software, you would probably be better served by going on You Tube and just searching for a few tutorials there.I was disappointed in the sense that I was hoping to find step-by-step instruction and what you get is pretty generalized and stuffed in paragraphs. And then some stuff I was expecting to learn more about wasn't even discussed.For instance, one thing about shooting green screen is increasing the shutter speed to reduce motion blur and getting a better key, but there is no mention of "shutter speed" in the index or in the book. There is a reference to motion blur, but it is not related to getting a better key and is more of an effect applied in using After Effects. I would have expected "The Green Screen Handbook" to cover this topic, if only in passing.
