## Description

Pick up your pencil, embrace your inner artist, and learn how to draw in thirty days with this step-by-step guide from an Emmy award-winning PBS host. "Sharpen your pencils and open your sketchbook; your teacher is waiting." ― The Boston Globe Drawing is an acquired skill, not a talent—anyone can learn to draw! All you need is a pencil, a piece of paper, and the willingness to tap into your hidden artistic abilities. With Emmy award-winning, longtime PBS host Mark Kistler as your guide, you'll learn the secrets of sophisticated three-dimensional renderings, and have fun along the way—in just twenty minutes a day for a month. Inside you'll find: Quick and easy step-by-step instructions for drawing everything from simple spheres to apples, trees, buildings, and the human hand and face More than 500 line drawings, illustrating each step Time-tested tips, techniques, and tutorials for drawing in three-D The nine Fundamental Laws of Drawing to create the illusion of depth in any drawing seventy-five student examples to encourage you in the process "Kistler's approach is light and fun, and rather than overwhelming with technical terminology and intimidating concepts, he instead starts you out putting pencil to paper. Within the first few pages of the book, you are already well on your way . . . The approach presented in this book works so well because you get instant results, which inspire you to continue with the process." ― Sacramento Book Review

Review: Does what the title says - I nearly overlooked this book because it didn't have a fancy artistic cover, unlike many other art instruction books. As an adult with no formal art training, no perceived drawing "talent" and looking for a first instruction book to help improve my infrequent doodling, I was also rather skeptical of the book's cheesy title claim of teaching someone to draw in 30 days. Then I noticed some before and after drawings by other reviewers, and after also considering titles like "Keys to Drawing", "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" and "How to Draw What You See", I decided to look beyond this book's cover and give it a go myself. The book has 30 lessons, and while it's taken me over 30 days, I'm very glad that I started with this book. The step-by-step lessons are clear and easy to follow, there's no complicated theory about technique etc. that could easily put off an absolute beginner. Most importantly, you see immediate results very quickly... By the end of lesson 2, my stack of spheres was already getting compliments! Since then I've realised that the lessons provide a really good primer to some basic drawing concepts - shapes, shading, foreshortening, perspective... and the fact you can reproduce a drawing similar to the author's by following the steps is a big confidence booster. Personally I found that this newfound confidence was just the encouragement needed for me to progress... This book will not teach you to draw realistically or become a master of portraits, but it does teach you how to draw basic pleasing images. I like the author's lighted-hearted happy style and it's been one enlightening lesson after another as I discovered I could draw things which I couldn't before. Since starting this book, I also got my hands on "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" and "Keys to Drawing", and remain satisfied that this book was the right one to start my drawing journey with. A great book for an absolute beginner.
Review: Who knew I could learn to draw?! - I am 10 days in and loving this book. I have never considered myself to be very artistic but this book is helping me to break things down to make drawing more manageable. I wanted to learn to draw and sketch so I could improve my watercolor and gouache painting. I can already see a big improvement in my skills. I am really enjoying this book!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Superb riiiiight up to the end (almost).

I'll start out with saying that I could barely draw a straight line before this book! Truly. As an absolute adult beginner, I found this book to be outstanding. Within three lessons, I was drawing things I never, ever possibly could have imagined myself capable of. The author describes the why, the how, the when, which makes everything so much more logical. I can't rave enough about what this book has taught me. The only thing stopping me from giving it 5 stars is that the last few lessons seem rushed (I'm on lesson 26 now). The last lesson was on faces and unfortunately, the "lesson" is to trace the face on the page several times. That doesn't teach me anything. I tried drawing it by sight and I ended up with a distorted face resembling an underwater witch! So for faces, I'll use another book. That has honestly been the only draw back I've seen. The one-perspective and two-perspective lessons are tough enough but are solid in giving you the basics and by the end, you can see where the drawings form and come to life. Considering I've only been drawing for 10 days now, I'm shocked at what I'm able to do and find myself looking at objects and pictures differently now. I can see the shadowing, how the effect is shown. I pay much more attention to the composition. Despite my poor face reproduction, I highly recommend this book!
