Robert Motherwell: Early Collages

Incredibly disappointing. And I say that as a huge fan of Motherwell's work in general and his collages specifically. The work in this book is simply not that interesting, the dregs of his oeuvre it seems. I can't even say that I gain from the developmental perspective of him as a growing artist. The only redeeming portion of this book are the bits about paper conservation and the fading of Motherwell's materials. If you dig paper conservation, there are lots of other books to refer to that are far better. As for Motherwell, I can't imagine he would have approved of this collection. It's lame.

Motherwell's journey from academic to artist facilitated by the joy and spontaneity of collage. The book does a nice job of tracing the artist's early development, including the materials he used. Beautiful plates make the purchase worthwhile all on their own. Truly magnificent.

This focused study of a limited but crucial period offers fascinating insights into Motherwell's early development and creative process. An excellent companion to the exhibition.
