Savannah Blues: A Novel (Weezie and Bebe Mysteries series Book 1)

Not my favorite, but had its moments.
I started this book and then skipped to the last several chapters and then went back and read some from the middle up to the part I had skipped to because it was one of those that made me nervous. When I feel like a character is being abused by the author and put into bad situations unnecessarily I have a tendency to want to skip ahead and see if the author will redeem their story in the end. This book had some very good parts and I laughed in places and appreciated the explanations of southern stuff within the story telling. I am to the point where I don’t want to have to deal with bullies and injustice, even in the short term, in my books while so much is happening in real life. That may be wrong, but it’s how I feel. Good storytelling and okay book. 4.25

A truly charming light read
Such a delightful book that has it all--antiques, Savannah charm, a murder, a love affair, humor, likeable characters--really everything. It's a light read that's mostly fun. I read it back when it first came out, remembered it fondly and read it again. My only criticism would be Daniel's inability to think of anything besides sex, but since he's handsome and a great chef, he's forgiven. And of course there's Weezie's blundering into every awkward situation out there, but that makes the story. It's a favorite for me in the light reading category.

a little bit slow at the start; then BOOM!!
Another dead body drops out of thr closet!MKA hits another homerun with this book. Characters are very realistic and the dilemmas that arise are a bit twisted but still entirely entertaining. Every thing is included from an ex-priest who "comes out," to a boozing mother with het Xanax-spiked "iced tea," to a crooked art dealer/forger, and a bitter gun-toting ex-wife -- it's all there with a healthy serving of Southern charm, thanks to the spirited Wizzie and an occasional visit from her bff, BeBe.You will not want to miss this one!

The first two-thirds were good. The last third kind of dragged.
It was pretty good - a lot of interesting characters. It’s a mystery with a chick lit feel. Someone is murdered early in the story which gets solved by the end. Weezie’s plan/hope is to buy a cabinet from an estate sale which she will sell for a large profit to allow her to start her own antiques store. There are delays/problems/questions regarding the cabinet which are resolved at the end. There is an on and off romance for Weezie and Daniel a chef. The ending was too fast. I wanted to see more of the romantic relationship. It was technically happy, but I didn’t feel good enough at the end.One chapter was Weezie first person, the next chapter was third person. I didn’t like the switching. It was jarring. I would have preferred everything 3rd person.DATA:Narrative mode: 1st and 3rd person. Story length: 499 pages. Swearing language: strong including religious swear words. Sexual content: one sex scene, no details shown. Setting: current day Georgia. Copyright: 2002. Genre: chick lit mystery with romance.

If You're Into Southern Novels.....
This book is so fun to read. I'm very into Southern living and lifestyles lately and this books hits it all. I love hearing about the weather, old homes and antiques and this book has it! When I first started reading it, I was a little bored and it read like the story may have taken place decades ago, not just a few years ago. It's supposed to be set recently, but the author writes in an old fashioned manner.Weezie is an antiques picker who was hurt by her husband and refuses to move off of her property, even when his hew fiancée moves in too. The tension between the two women comes to a head when the new woman, Caroline, is found dead - and all fingers point to Weezie. It's an excellent story of history, suspense, and love. Everyone seems to have problems of their own in this book and each somehow has to do with the next. After a while you won't be able to put it down!

Very fun read
I really enjoyed this book! A lot of fun, especially for someone who is an antique dealer and lived in the Low Country (both savannah and Bluffton), in the 90s and just moved back to Okatie a few months ago.Weezie and Bebe are two ladies I'd definitely want to be friends with. The book was laced with places and sayings that are so distinctly Savannah. It really hit the mark. Looking forward to the next in the series

Binge read this series
I recently discovered the writing of Mary Kay Andrews and there is just something about how she writes that pull you into the book and leaves you wanting more. When I saw she had a series about 2 friends, I cleared my week and binged all the books in the series. I just love Weezie, her style, her warmth and compassion, how she refuses to give up, all make this a great story and being reduced to living in a gate house, while her cheating husband lives in her dream home with his new girlfriend, I am not sure I would have been so nice. Then her friend BeBe almost 180 degrees different but always willing to put everything aside for Weezie, I love it. If you want a great series choose this one

Very entertaining and funny! I can’t wait to read the next in series and I’m looking forward to all her other not related titles. I needed a new author and I’ve found her! :)

What a great read !
Eloise "Weezie" Foley, the heroine of this book suffers from the injustice of her divorce settlement. Her philandering ex-husband left her nearly nothing, apart form the former carriage house which is unfortunately on the same premises where he now lives with his new girlfriend. Her Ex got the main house, that Weezie had renovated and had put not only her labour in, but also her heart.Furthermore she has to face the "happy" couple every day and is struggling to make a living as a antiques "picker", searching for discarded treasures in dumpsters and at estate sales.Quite an explosive mixture and its not really a surprise, when the girlfriend turns up dead...This book was real page-turner! So hilarious and with that special sense of humor that the author also shows in her Julia Callahan Garrity-Series,written under the name of "Kathy Hogan Trochek".I laughed out loud several times and it was great fun.Weezie and her friends/family are very likeable and the story is enthralling, with the right amount of suspense. Can't wait to read more !!!

AN EXCELLENT READ!
Not as good as Danielle Steele, but a excellent read! The continuity of the different strands of the plot is well managed. You develop over time a close relationship to her recurring characters, which are common to three of her novels; so it is hard to put down in the end. Let's hope the author returns to these same characters in future efforts and develops some of them to a greater extent (such as Bebe, a particularly interesting character)

Light reading
I must admit two things: First, I am a European who read this book as a preparation for a trip to Savannah and I wanted to learn something about this town. Second, I am a man. I emphasize my gender, because this book appears to be very feminine and maybe my male judgement is somewhat biased.Savannah Blues obviously rides of the wave created by John Berendt's "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil". Savannah Blues also is a crime story and a story about Savannah's society. Yes, I learnt some aspects of Savannah's aristocracy. The actual story, however, is very thin. The characters are clear-cut, either good or bad (easily recognizable). There is absolutely no psychological depth in this book. Thus, light reading. On the other side, the author has tried to combine all ingredients which seem to make a successful novel. A little crime, a little sex, a bad ex-husband, a nice uncle, a funny girl-friend, a cute dog - and a mother who is basically good but unfortunately an alcoholic. I usually do not tell about a book's ending, but in this case I cannot avoid to refer to one aspect of the book's ending. Regarding the alcoholism part of the book, it is like one of those "quick'n'easy" recipes from cookbooks: A notorious, long-time alcoholic is cured within days and without any effort. Amazing!
