Movement Over Maxes: Developing The Foundation for Baseball Performance

Required Reading
After 20+ years of running high school softball strength and conditioning programs, what I appreciate most about Dechant's "Movement Over Maxes" is the balance that he strikes between explaining the technical, bio-mechanical rationale for his approach while grounding the writing in individual exercises and full workouts that the you can use immediately. Every coach will benefit from his clear explanations and illustrations of essential athletic movements and, especially, the verbal cues that we can use to help our athletes achieve them."Movement Over Maxes" is organized around progressions from proper athletic positions leading up to performance training. Dechant identifies for the reader the common ways that athletes' bodies will compensate when under a load too heavy, and he explains how those compensations will ultimately limit athletic performance and lead to injury. The reader learns how to identify the athlete's readiness to progress and the methods the coach can use to accelerate that progression. While Dechant writes specifically for baseball/softball training with some text dedicated specifically to the needs of throwers, coaches from EVERY sport would benefit from his work. His chapters on The Athletic Position, Speed and Acceleration, and The Big 5 Movement Patterns provide practical instruction and theoretical insight that is universally applicable.
