You've seen the YouTube videos where an overzealous TSA employee cut the locks off a gun case and actually damaged the firearms inside. This lock fits the Pelican Vault Cases perfectly and leaves NO room for a bolt cutter to reach the shackle. The lock body is too wide for most bolt cutters found in airport luggage handling areas. However, let's be real, most firearm travel cases are "PLASTIC" or some other kind of material easily defeated with a blowtorch. This lock is by no means "pickproof" - there's no such thing -- just check out the "LockPickingLawyer"s channel on YouTube. I went through six different trailer hitches before I found this one to fit the Vault cases.

I really like Trimax locks, I have about 10 and never had a difficulty with any of them. I ordered this lock to lock my Minn Kota trolling motor to the quick remove mounting bracket. Upon receipt of the lock I went to install and it does not fit.I called Trimax to make certain of the diameter of the shackle which I was told that is is .25 ( 1/4 inch). I got out my caliper and measured the hole where the lock goes on the base and it measured .262 inch. I then measured the shackle of the coupler lock .274 inch. There is the problem, over sized.I really wanted this lock to work for my needs, but it does not. I did call Trimax again an advised what I found. The lady I spoke with was very nice and said she would pass the info along to the right person. I am disappointed as I really like this coupler lock, so if you need one a verification of the diameter needed would be in order.

I have had the flat key version of this lock for at least 9 years and it is still in use. It has been locked on an ATV trailer tongue 24/7/365 in all kinds of weather conditions (rain, snow, ice, dust, dirt) and temperatures ranging from 105 to minus 15 degrees. After the first few years the rubber loop that keeps the rubber cap attached to the lock deteriorated and split. I continued to use the rubber cap until I misplaced it. Due to the internal key hole cover the lock did not get any debris in it and continued to function. The chrome finish is still in great condition with just normal wear marks. I have cleaned and lubricated it a few times with WD-40. I ordered this lock again this month for another trailer and it came with the round key. I am expecting many years of service.

I think these might be the best coupler locks made in terms of design. I wish they made them higher quality though. Maybe Boron. The one I had broke in the key area somehow, no idea how, to where I could no longer insert the key at all. And it wasn’t due to rust or stuck pins. I still liked it so much I bought 2 more for my other trailers. I will say, you need to measure the size you need because it was a very tight fit so it wouldn’t always lock unless I squeezed it together. But that’s what you want! A thief can’t get a saw blade in there to cut it off.

Have bought several of these just to keep people honest. It is what it is, a deterrent. I lost the keys to one of them once, took my Dewalt grinder with cutoff disk to it and was able to cut through it in 2 minutes. Assuming that a thief could do that as well in the middle of the night, but would cause alot of noise.. I would think this in combination with other deterrents like a ball lock, heavy duty chain with lock around the rims to a post in concrete, would be best to deter a thief. The combination of multiple deterrents would take Too much time and energy and noise to cut everything and a chance of getting caught.

Locks are pretty much to keep otherwise honest people from getting tempted by an easy theft. This lock is especially suited for "honest" people. Although all hitch coupler handles have a 1/4"+ hole and thus limits the lock shackle size, the Achilles for this lock is that the lock opening is wide enough to give access to bolt cutters when on my coupler. I do like this Type A style of key, though, as it adds a layer of security. I'll keep it but I thought I'd pass this information on for anyone considered this lock. Recommended but with reservations.
