Product Description DONNA HARAWAY: STORY TELLING FOR EARTHLY SURVIVAL features Haraway in a playful and engaging exploration of her life, influences, and ideas. Best-known for her ground-breaking work on gender, cyborgs, animals and post-colonialism, Haraway is a passionate and discursive storyteller. The film is structured around a series of discussions on subjects including capitalism, science fiction, unconventional marital and sexual partnerships, the role of Catholicism in her upbringing, humans and dogs, the suppression of women's writing, the surprisingly fascinating history of orthodontic aesthetics, and the need for new post-patriarchal narratives. It is a remarkably impressive range, from a thinker with a curious and nimble mind. DONNA HARAWAY: STORY TELLING FOR EARTHLY SURVIVAL is a clever and insightful glimpse into the thoughts of a major contemporary figure. Special-effects-gimmicky, loopy documentary about a loopy yet intriguing thinker
An uneven, oddly-paced, overall-enjoyable documentary consisting of mainly interviews with Haraway and some gimmicky special effects. Well-filmed, but the molasses-slow pace felt self-indulgent. Haraway is an animated character who holds one's attention, but I've always felt she is sometimes brilliant and sometimes one of those garden-variety wacked-out older hippy types you find abundantly in California (I can say this as a 28-year CA resident once). I knew a little about her & her philosophical work going into this doc, but wouldn't say I learned a whole lot, though this is a good film for the Haraway novice. One of my favorite Haraway arguments is about OncoMouse and genetically-modified organisms, which this doc did not explore at all, unfortunately. It's basically fairly static chunks of interview footage interspersed with nature imagery and music. Coherent it is not, but then again neither is Haraway. I hate to say it, but the traditional documentary format (opening hook, intro of who subject is, subject's background, present moment interview footage, etc.) may have worked better. This film felt like a Haraway fan mixing interview footage while trying out smooth/nearly seamless digital manipulation, but it doesn't quite work overall. It does however confirm that Haraway is one wacky lady. If you have never read her, it might be best to avoid this doc for the bias it could create (positive or negative). It felt closer to the ridiculous "What the Bleep Do We Know?" than some of the better philosophical documentaries and films (Waking Life, Zizek documentaries, etc.).Haraway is an amusing and unique thinker, but this doc only muddled her already-loopy work rather than illuminating or clarifying it.

A delightful glimpse into her mind and life
Good for those who may only be moderately familiar with her writing and should know more, and also for those who are perhaps die-hard fans.
