1940s pin-up art given a 21st century make-over
Romain Hugault is a designer and aviation enthusiast, well-known in France for his graphic novels and illustrations. He has produced a range of books in the last decade, all of which have an aeronautical theme, some of which have a pin-up girl theme, and some of which combine the two. This book is his one of the latter, and the second of a pair of such books he has created. This one features just over 40 illustrations (20 colour, and 20 monochrome) and very little text (all in French). Hugault's artwork is sexy and politically incorrect, but executed with tremendous skill. He understands anatomy and figure drawing very well, and has a precise and painterly style that I like. His artwork features a lot of partial nudity, so I would not recommend it to younger readers.I am very interested portraiture and figure drawing, so I collect the work of artists in the genre. Hugault's work is technically brilliant, sharp and sassy, but has a 1940s quality about it that harks back to earlier cheesecake artists such as Vargas, Elvgren and Caniff. If you are familiar with those old war comic novels, with page after page of ink sketches that told heroic war stories, then improve the image quality a hundred times, and then colourize them, and you'll get close to what Hugault does. His drawings are somewhere between technical illustrations and graphic art, but of the highest order. It is disappointing that several of the large illustrations are cut in half by the binding but, putting that aside, the book looks great. Hugault's original artwork sells for very high prices, and seems to disappear into private collections, so this is likely to be the only way most people will get to see his work close-up.

Great aviation inspired pin-ups
The book doesn't have many pages but the full colour art is clever and very well drawn. The focus is not just on the usual piston figters and the ladies seem to always have the measure of the chaps (who are always the the aircrew). As noted these aren't feminist approved, e.g. a striking WAAF standing on a spitfire wing 'leaning forward' to pour a cup of tea to a pilot in the cockpit. But the ladies do have a smile and a wink.I can see the these fitting well as pin-ups in the original ground crew workshops, at an unamed aerodrome in the distant past.

If you like girly nose art on aeroplanes....
You'll love this book! I stumbled across Romain Hugault's artwork a couple of years ago and I absolutely love it as I've always been a sucker for aircraft and women in stockings and suspenders and this book fits the bill.

An interesting present to give.
I purchased this as a fun gift to give to my father who likes planes and scantily clad women (who doesn't). It did not quite live up to expectations, which I admit may have been due to poor research on my part and too high expectations. There is not as many pictures as I would have expected (it is no longer in my possession, but I would say no more than around twenty pictures in total). And unless I was delivered the wrong version or I completely failed to notice the obvious, it is actually written in French (despite the title and blurb being in English). Although this kind of made the present more fun, as he thinks he is good at French (he is not).

Book of the pin-up master
Well if you have found this book you have been looking for it so you know what you get when you buy a Romain Hugault book. Great WWII plains, women and clothes.

Wonderful paintings
This book has a number of colour and black&white (pencil) artwork showing aircraft (of various eras) and pin-ups, something that together has an appeal since the a woman's shaped was first painted on an aircraft fuselage to boost up the morale of its crew. The artists, Hugault and Negroni, are such masters in the art and both airplanes and women come to life on their work. Highly recommended to all aircraft enthusiasts.
