Will this darken a light brown leather jacket?

It might at first but as soon as it dries it should lighten back up. I’ve only used it on black leather and it’s amazing.

Can this be used on leather handbags?

Yes, that’s what is designed for. Will not rub off on your clothes like shoe polish or cream.

The smell is quite strong and It does not give my leather bag the kind of shine I was looking for. I start to wonder if this is the real deal?

This is used to rejuvenate as a step one. If you want high gloss they have high gloss polish for that purpose.
