Captain Marvel: What Makes A Hero

A Great Introduction to Female Marvel Heroes
I've been waiting for a Marvel children's book that would introduce some of the female characters the way DC's My First Book of Girl Power does. It was fun for my 5- and 7-year-olds to see some of the heroes from the MCU that aren't in the Marvel books we already have, and I know they enjoyed the beautiful original paintings as much as I did. Each spread features and different female hero from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the text addresses a part of being a hero. One of my favorite parts of this book is that it doesn't make a big deal about them all being girls; my boys didn't catch on to that until we were almost at the end.The messaging here is incredibly inspirational, and not just feel-good stuff, either. For instance, the spread for Peggy Carter, who fought Nazis/Hydra in World War II, says, "It's important that we speak up for ourselves, but even more important that we speak up for those who cannot." Nakia petitioned T'Challa to share Wakanda's tech with the world, and her spread reads, "Hiding from the world may keep you safe, but safety means nothing if it's not a right for everyone." Mantis's spread even discusses knowing how to express your emotions. There were a lot of rare words, too, like "sacrifice" and "competitors" and "advocate." This is good - it's one of the many advantages to reading books versus other activities, like watching television - and we could talk about what some of those rare words meant if it wasn't obvious. The reading level is above what I was envisioning, so this is a book that the kids can grow with while still appreciating the artwork and the general idea of the messaging. Really, it's so inspiring, it could even make a gift for a high school grad who also happens to be a huge Marvel nerd. Now, if the publisher would also put out a board book version that simplifies the text to a sentence or two - like Vashti Harrison's books that I covered a week or so ago - I would snatch that up in a heartbeat. I bet a lot of other parents would, too.

My 3-year-old has a fire in her soul!
I bought this book for my 3-year-old, and it has quickly become her favorite book. She has requested this as her bedtime story four nights in a row! It's a great introduction to the women of the MCU, and I love the messages they share. They talk about what it means to be a hero, helping others, committing yourself to a cause, learning from your mistakes and growing. There are a lot of big words in there, and every time we read it we talk a little more about what they mean. At one point Captain Marvel talks about "that fire in your soul" being something that gives everyone power. We talked about what that means. How it's that feeling inside that makes her want to go higher and faster on the swings, that feeling that makes her want to be an astronaut! Now, she likes to say "I have a fire in my soul!"

Great Book with Important Message for Boys and Girls
My 3.5 year old really loves this book. Although he hasn’t seen the MCU movies, he has been introduced to a lot of the characters via Disney shows so he was pretty familiar. I was worried it would be too advanced for him but he was totally enthralled due to the art and the character voices Mommy imitated from the movies. What I really want to emphasize about this book doesn’t focus on super powers but how each character’s traits and convictions are what brought them to greatness. We received this book June of 2020 during Pride and a high point of BLM and mommy was totally choking up over the parts about speaking out against injustice and doing what is right.

Very Cute for little hero’s! ☺️
The media could not be loaded. Very cute book! My daughter (5) loves it!It’s not really a storybook, more of a book explains what makes these women, hero’s. It helps encourage and boost confidence.10/10!

Amazing Book! Damaged in Shipping.
This book had me in tears. It's so sweet and well written. The artwork in gorgeous. The book itself would be 5 stars, but ours was a bit damaged in shipping. We taped it up, but maybe a bit of bubble wrap or tissue paper around the books before they are packaged should be done.

An important book for all ages!
This is a wonderfully inspirational book for...well, all ages really. While it’s technically a children’s book, I know of many adults who could also use to read these words. The individual profiles get to the heart of how every one of US can utilize our unique set of talents to become heroes ourselves. There is no single right way to be a hero—no required set of abilities, nor any particular set-back make us any more or less likely to be brave, courageous, or heroic. Any combination of characteristics can be fashioned to help ourselves and others make it through the tough times. This is a beautifully illustrated and important book! These days, we all could use some help finding our inner hero.

Girl Empowerment
My 5 & 7 year old girls read this book weekly! They love the graphics and reading about the female super heroes. It's so nice that there's a book they can read that shows them that they are capable of great things too, not just boys/men as it's typically been portrayed in history.

Cute. Not a story, but inspiring. Perfect for young girls
When I purchased, I wasn't quite sure what to expect - the description didn't make it clear. It's beautifully printed, brightly colored, with a page (sometimes 2) written in first person from each of the Marvel heroines. Many of them are from Black Panther, which celebrates the most Marvel heroines. Each also has an inspiring statement and reminder related to their character. Very pleased and know my daughters will love it!

Preachy non-stories, barely any Captain Marvel
This book is kind of preachy and the kids (both 6, one boy & one girl) found it boring and wanted to read a real book when we were barely halfway through... the art is beautiful, but I think stories of the female characters actually doing heroic things would be much more evocative and interesting storytelling. The title is also misleading because Captain Marvel only has one page. But the art is absolutely gorgeous.

Bonito pero corto
El libro está bonito pero con muy pocas hojas y realmente no hay mucho contenido. Esperaba más.
