Ray Donovan - Season 6 [DVD] [2019]

Corruption in New York replaces Hollywood sleaze.
Ray's attempted suicide at the end of Season 5 is foiled as he is rescued from drowning in New York's East River by a bystanding Staten Island based Police Officer who helps him recuperate and gain some form of personal equilibrium before agreeing to work for a Candidate in the New York Mayoral contest supported by media mogul Sam Winslow. It soon becomes apparent that the Police Dept. in Staten Island is riddled by corruption at the behest of the incumbent Mayor and Ray is forced to try and balance his new obligations to his rescuer and the Police brotherhood and the requirements of his Political employer. In addition there are other personal pressures brought about by other individual members of the Donovan family following Mickey's unexpected early release from prison.Season 6 is marked by an increased level of brutality a great deal of which is visited upon Ray himself but luckily this is never allowed to reach the level of being simply gratuitous. It is more an illustration as to how much less Ray is in control both of his own actions and emotions plus the demands put upon him by others than in previous Series. The appearance of Dr. Amiot (Alan Alda at his most avuncular) who counsels Ray to accept treatment for PTSD brought about as a result of Abby's death offers Ray a chance of rebuilding his family relationships and a form of redemption for his past actions. One assumes that this journey will form the basis for Season 7.Season 6 can be viewed as a companion piece to Season 5 and remains compelling viewing - there is no indication that the writers or producers are running out of ideas so we can await future developments of all the major characters with confidence.Extras comprise Ray Donovan: Inside New York City / Rise, Rebuild, Reclamation.Audio and Subtitles : English and English SDH only respectively.

RAY DEFIES ALL THE ODDS TO RETURN YET AGAIN
At the end of season five, what with a messed up mental state and a suicidal fall from so far up on a building into New York's East River, I just concluded that it was the end of Ray Donovan for good. However, even though incredulity is more than a bit stretched to start with, Ray Donovan gets hauled out of the river by an unconventional cop, who befriends him as a kindred spirit whilst Ray puts himself back together. He hooks up again with his father, brothers and daughter who continue to be dysfunctional nightmares to everyone they come in contact with just like before ( but family is family ennit ). The action is now New York based with a new bunch of those many faceted story lines running alongside each other that the previous five seasons had entertained us with. When so many other serialised programmes these days are being released, watered down to comply with softer viewing standards, you can rely on Ray Donovan to barge through all of that by grabbing your attention without pussyfooting around.Eamonn

Getting even better.
Many shows that run on, season after season, fail to maintain the merits of the original. Not so with Ray Donovan. If anything, Season 6 improves on what has gone before (no mean praise). Acting, direction (multiple directors) and, perhaps above all, writing (multiple writers) are exceptional. As a writer I especially like the lean scripts - no one uses ten words when one will do - and often even less than that. All the roles are expertly played, expectedly by leads Liev Schreiber, Eddie Marsan and Jon Voigt, although in this season the roles played by Dash Mihok, Kerris Dorsey and Katherine Moennig have expanded very effectively. The final episode of this season is way OTT, but given what has gone before anything less would have been a disappointment and this show is never that. Currently (December 2019), Season 7 is playing in the US. Hopefully, the rest of us won’t have too long to wait.

An enjoyable series
The action moves to New York in this entertaining series starring the seemingly indestructible Donovans...

Ray Donovan-, dis functionality on steroids.
Having watched only the first two episodes of Season 6 it appears to be up to it's usual high standard. Unless you have watched it from the beginning it would tend to be confusing for someone, as the plot shifts continually from one character to another. This does help to keep the pace of the action moving along. I expect most people who have bought this season will have been watching it right from the very first episode of Season one, anyway.

Good season
Good season but not as good as the previous seasons. The quality of the discs wasn’t as good as the others. Was very jumpy and the episode titles could not be read on the menu page. However was still watchable, so only knocked off one point.

What? I’m a little deaf. Gulp.
A fantastic series with season 5 being the perfect culmination. Sadly season 6 turns into parody. Liev Schreiber is a great actor but his hearing and alcohol dependency are an issue. Watch every scene he is in. He walks into the scene, has a huge gulp of booze, and whatever is said to him he asks “What?”. It becomes addictive watching this repeated through three discs! You start waiting for him to go through the motions. Should have pulled the plug at season 5.
