The Wedding Date

Incredible Romantic Comedy with a Delightful Debra Messing and Dermot Mulroney!
A wholly delightful and underrated romantic comedy from the 2000’s!Director Clare Kilner’s romantic comedy The Wedding Date (2005) is really wonderful. I enjoyed it thoroughly and do not understand what movie critics who panned it across the board saw. Writer Dana Fox creates endearing characters, insight into relationships, cute romance, tender supporting love, funny jokes, and a shocking twist full of melodrama. The Wedding Date has it all. Clare Kilner’s direction lets the actors breathe in really intimate scenes for every blunt conversation full of wisdom and honesty. I love how she balances the jokes with romance drama effortlessly, so that The Wedding Date feels lighthearted, while still dealing with real human feelings of lingering feelings of love and regret.Editor Mary Finlay deftly cuts scenes with a swift certainty of when the joke has ended or when we’ve gotten just enough tasteful kissing or sincerity. The Wedding Date is a tight 88 minutes that never overstays its welcome, but also provides heartfelt romance among the endless laughter. It’s so cute! I loved cinematographer Oliver Curtis’ careful close-ups that always know when the audience should be focusing more on either Debra Messing or Dermot Mulroney’s character reactions to a bit of flirting or information. The wide shots are pretty, but Curtis keeps the camera close to heart, so we’re often right in the emotional heart of the film.Debra Messing is sublime as The Wedding Date’s hot redhead romantic heroine Kat Ellis. She’s endearing, playful, and devastating besides being hilarious. I’ve never seen Debra act before and she’s resplendent in The Wedding Date as the desperate for love and heartbroken Kat. She feels like a surprisingly realistic romantic heroine here I’m sure plenty of girls will relate to for years to come. Debra Messing is delightful and lovable as I am completely charmed by her.I’m very impressed with the handsome and charming Dermot Mulroney as male escort Nick Mercer. He’s very subtle in his depiction of Nick as we are aware of his nuances that he understands and sympathizes with Messing’s Kat the entire time. I love how kind and supportive his dashing romantic hero is without ever feeling cruel or mean spirited. He’s cool, smart, tender, and nice in The Wedding Date. Dermot Mulroney is the ideal male lead for a romantic comedy in The Wedding Date as charismatic and dreamy here as he was in My Best Friend’s Wedding with Julia Roberts.Amy Adams is adorable and hysterical as Kat’s horribly selfish sister Amy Ellis. Amy Adams is a cute blonde this time, but it’s her shocking character that makes The Wedding Date’s magnificent finale so scandalous and emotionally electrifying. Amy Adams is always amazing! Sarah Parish is funny and chaotic as Kat’s very forward and horny cousin TJ. I cannot believe she knew the twist too when they revealed the big secret!Jack Davenport is great as Amy’s sympathetic and likable groom Edward Fletcher-Wooten. His last sprint in The Wedding Date’s finale is fantastic and satisfying to see Jeffrey get his comeuppance. Jeremy Sheffield is like the ultimate romantic comedy villain as the wretched sleaze Jeffrey. He’s an unbelievably disgusting creepy person with no morals or decency. I know you’ll loathe his fiendishly wicked antagonist. Peter Egan is very perceptive and intriguing as Kat’s knowing step-father Victor Ellis. Holland Taylor is truly deplorable as Kat’s inconsiderate mother Bunny Ellis. The things she said at the wedding reception were so cruel!Production designer Tom Burton creates lavish sets for this expensive London wedding. I felt like I was watching Four Weddings and a Funeral. Set decorator Barbara Herman-Skelding did a great job putting nice cozy furniture and rich looking props all over. Composer Blake Neely brings a warmth and playful romance to The Wedding Date with his masterful music.I loved the killer soundtrack with nice romantic songs like The Corrs’ “Breathless" playing in the uplifting introduction or Maroon 5’s “Secret” is excellent for the passionate love making sex sequence. Costume designer Louise Page did a fantastic job with the sultry dresses and sharp suits. I loved the blue, black, and red dresses for Debra Messing. Amy Adams is glowing in every lovely outfit like her adorable blush make-up.In all, The Wedding Date is fabulous and well worth seeing. I absolutely loved it!

A good movie
When I first saw this movie come out, I judged it harshly and thought it was pretty stupid, despite the fact that I hadn't even seen it. I just saw it tonight and I thought it was really great.(SPOILER!!!) It seems to me that "happily ever after" is the sugar pill, placebo if you will, of Hollywood; and the public soaks it up. Now mind you, this film wasn't nitty gritty in any way shape or form; but it did touch on some serious issues.People are flawed; people are messed up. Nobody is perfect, and despite this fact, we insist on finding that "perfect person". Whatever your criteria, were so image obsessed that what looks perfect on paper isn't what it actually seems.Nick is a high priced escort (a profession low on the totem pole) and Kat is barely making ends meet working for an airline. They are not perfect by any means, and neither is their relationship, and neither are the other people in their lives that makes the film. They wouldn't be who they were, were it not for their past experiences and choices. Whether good or bad; its who they are. Do you walk away from someone because of that fact? Do you walk away from someone because of their mistakes? Life is full of lessons; but its not a lesson, and its not a full life, if you never learned from it.Overall I enjoyed this, easy watching bit of a chick flick!

In my top 5 Rom-Coms
This is a delightful romantic comedy and delivers all the standard requirements for this type of film and then some.Firstly, the two main characters - Nick and Kat - are both gorgeous and likeable. By the end of the film you care about them and want things to work out. The supporting cast are also very good - notably Sarah Parrish as Kat's outspoken and raunchy cousin and Peter Egan as Kat's very loveable stepfather.Secondly, its a good story - Kat is still single after a bad breakup with Geoffrey, who is to be the best man at her sister's wedding - and Kat can't face going alone. So she hires Nick to pretend to be her date. Yes, you can see where its going already, but its worth the journey - Nick and Kat are very funny together and the romantic scenes are satisfyingly romantic. The backdrop to all this is a very upper middle class wedding in a sunny and green England. The music for the film also deserves a lot of credit - both the song selection and the score are delightful and add a lot of warmth to what is a film with real heart - its not afraid of showing Kat's devastation and struggle and some serious issues are explored and not lightly dismissed. Some suspension of disbelief is required, but its forgiveable in what is a truly delightful and entertaining film. One to keep and bring out for a girl's night in or to curl up on the sofa and watch when you need cheering up.

A great "Chic Flic"- A funny film that has several twists and turns resulting in the happily ever after event, with great acting by not only the main cast but everyone. I would recommend you buy this DVD for yourself if you haven't seen the film and I am sure you will enjoy the ups and downs and then the ups again of the film. If you have seen the film a rerun would not be a waste of time just another excuse to enjoy yourself.

Amusing But A Headliner !
This is a well acted and amusing film but it is missing some of the magic ingredients of the very best British RomComs. It is a pleasant diversion without having the pull to really grab one with the biggest failure probably being the lack of chemistry between the two leads. The film also feels predictable and formulaic in parts although there are enough good one-liners and 'fun' scenes to make it worth watching.

89% LOVE this film...as do I! 5 Stars for film...zero stars for actual DVD!
Stated this was for region 2 (Europe generally) but it would not play on either of my two DVD players and not even on my neighbour's!On all three DVD players it stated: WRONG REGION!!! Had to return and find a genuine DVD.
