The saga of incredible courage and unimaginable evil
The Border - the third book in Cartel trilogy - the blood-soacked,intricately woven story of incredible courage and incredible evil.I read all three books and to say that I was badly shaken would be to say nothing. The story made me more aware of the existence of Evil than I ever was before. The Evil of drugs and those who control them,Cartels total disregard for human life and unimaginable cruelty. The courage of people who fight against drugs and cartels, people like Art Keller, locked forever in the prison of his fight,Mari,Ana,Pablo and others who fight and die.Lives of millions of ordinary people destroyed by drugs and left in misery, poverty and hopelessness. No review can give a proper credit to Don Winslow and his mind-shaterring books, and I can only express my deep appreciation of Mr Winslow outstanding talent. He has shown me Hell on Earth but also spirit and courage of people fighting it.Cartel trilogy is one of the most remarkable stories of our time ever been written.

Brilliant. Read this book
Critics loved it, they are right. There is a reason The Border is a Best Seller. Winslow's latest "City on Fire" is also awesome. A caution: if you read one Winslow book you will probably read all the others - and he is a prolific writer!

5 stars for the trilogy not just this book
The books are not perfect by any means but I've never been engrossed so much by such a long story. Sad the series is over but happy to have experienced it.

Great End to this Excellent Series
The final chapter in Don Winslow’s trilogy of the Mexican drug war depicts what happens when significant players are eliminated, and the control of the drug scene in Mexico turns into a fight among many smaller players. Art Keller has a new role in this chapter as the director of the Drug Enforcement Administration in Washington. But that does not mean he is stopping from leading primary street level operations to target the drug lords' profits. More new and intriguing players appear in “The Border,” and American politics plays a more central role in this book. This is a worthy closing of the story of Keller and the drug war. Given the state of the world we live in today, it, of course, has many sad endings but also redemptions. Fans of the series should enjoy The Border.

The Cartel 2: Orange Man Bad
What a disappointment. I was very excited to read the conclusion of this long saga that began in The Power of the Dog, but now I wish the story had ended with the last book, The Cartel. Both previous instalments were tautly plotted and written. This is an over-long mess that you can't help but think would have been whipped into shape by an editor if this was not a big-name author. No matter whether you love or hate Donald Trump, the way he's clumsily dropped into this mess (using a fictional name but his actual tweets and speeches) makes the book even less enjoyable. Maybe the author thought people would be so happy to read an anti-Trump screed (but that makes reference to fictional crimes involving the cartels, so, er... what?) that they'd overlook the many failings of this book.Every now and then the old Don Winslow magic is there. When he writes well, it's a sight to behold. It was nice catching up with some old characters from the first book. But that nostalgia isn't worth the price of admission here. If you've read the first two books, preserve your memories and leave this mess alone.

More brilliance
The Border is every bit as compelling, textured and vividly drawn as the first two books in the trilogy. Winslow's characterizations feel authentic while often being unpredictable. He doesn't just tell you a story, he immerses you in a deep, dark world with a few welcome shafts of sunshine breaking through. Much more of this book is in the U.S., as compared to the first two, and it's great to bring the story onto home soil with the background and history of The Power of the Dog and The Cartel behind it. I felt thoroughly satisfied turning the final page, but was sorry to have it end.

Unforgettable
A gripping end to this outstanding trilogy. He builds memories so well that he can drop in characters from the first book and you easily pick up their part in this epic story. Superb.

It's the final book of a trilogy.
Brilliantly written.

Great read
Fantastic book, maybe the best in the cartel trilogy. Need eleven more words in order to post the review. Enjoy.

The Border - A Must-Read for all Followers of Art Keller...
... and the out-standing Trilogy about his very personal 'War on Drugs'. But first do Yourself ONE favor: Read the former, the second part "The Cartel" - maybe while waiting for Your copy of this masterpiece! Or maybe only the part of the massacre in Guatemala, THAT one which NEVER was. You may understand a bit better some 'arrangements' for the remaining protagonists of this eternal drama. By having the vivid pictures still right before Your eyes - of what happened to some of the Big Players, and some of the minor ones, too. I personally did that favor to my ageing memory and I not regret it, being now through this book about a war that hardly 'ends all wars'. Right there in Guatemala Art Keller killed the Wolf - and now the Coyotes are on the loose in Mexico. And they are shedding more blood than ever, to get a piece of the now orphaned Sinaloa Cartel...Don Winslow is once again absolutely at his best, by writing down a truth that is aimed especially at the present President of the United States (who is at his very best here, too - twittering over everything and everyone, and often spreading his famous fake news...). And together with his son-in-law and most of his hard-headed Counsellors officially does not want to acknowledge a hard fact: That there will ALWAYS be that kind of 'War on Drugs' - however long or high a wall they may - maybe - build. And that the most helpful helpers for the Mobs and/or Cartels are sitting since "medieval" times cool, calm and collected in the highest imaginable places in the struggling US of A. In the Government, and in other sky-high places of the Senate, the Justice, the Armed Forces, the many Secret Services and so on, going - and not in trickles! - down to simply underpaid Policemen/women or Prison Guards or else. Because that war and its surroundings are making Big Money for ALL of them, costing the American citizens not only their hard-earned Dollars, but often the lives of their own children. Who die every year from the always increasing drug-abuse.One thing right from the beginning: This is once again a highly violent thriller, like his 2 predecessors. And no-one can write about violence in such an almost... natural way like Don Winslow. Who coolly and simply observes the political reality in both Mexico and the USA and reports it to his readers. He doesn't embellish anything, and here we are at the very thin line where fiction is meeting hard and proven facts. Some fact-using-fiction, I would call it. And Winslow does not fear anyone or anything - he writes. To open our eyes to actions which normally no-one could only imagine doing to fellow men, women and even children. And the poor children are as always those who have to suffer the most...But first he opens our eyes to understand the situation about the new Heroin addiction in the States. That has been created and enforced by the big Pharmaceutical Industries - with the help of friendly doctors prescribing morphine-alike pain killers to their left and their right. And hooking up an entirely new generation of drug users and buyers. Who want and need always faster and higher kicks. So give them enhanced products - but if the street-level dealers are not very very cautious, they may easily kill their own clients right that way.OK - that whole book - but especially the bloody parts in Mexico - is like a kick in the stomach or even more delicate parts. But I have literally devoured it in a tour-de-force of almost two days of nearly non-stop reading. I went in head first, and I simply couldn't get out any more. And do not remain too shocked by the eventually very hard facts that often come right out of the blue and hit like bullets. It's only one great Reality Show...A must-read for all those who want more political insight about our partner in commerce and defense that are the United States of America. Always more and more like a troubled giant that stumbles from war to war. And we go with him, wherever he is going - in our advanced era of Globalization. Read and learn more
