God Gave Rock & Roll To You: The Greatest Hits

I'll go over Argents well compiled Greatest hits packages:The Argent Anthology:A Collection of Greatest Hits= Good for it's time (rel. 1976) but at only 8 tracks you probly prefer a different collection (has full version of Hold your head up)God Gave Rock n' Roll to you:Greatest Hits= It has their most well known tracks and the full length version of hold your head up if i had to buy only one cd by this band then id have to go with this one but this does miss charted song tragedy and pleasure which is on anthology.Greatest:the singles collection= this is the best overall review of the bands work but my favorite song is hold your head up and this single version cuts the songs play time in half if you dont mind the single version of hold your head up this one has the most tracks. The other single versions of songs i prefer over the album versions and this compilation has every song off anthology.

As another review states, the disc individual song markers are incorrect. New songs begin at the ending of previous songs, therefore to pull a single track is impossible without missing the first few seconds (which are attached to the ending of the previous track). This is a return item for me.

All the hits are here ,plus a few pleasant surprises.

A bit of a mixed bag. The material up to and from the 'In Deep' album is fresh and with a bit of oomph. 'God gave rock n roll is the highlight After that it gets a bit insipid and repetitive. Russ Ballard is sorely missed.

I have long been a fan of 70s prog rock but Argent were a band I have sadly overlooked. But no more - and I am enjoying finding out more about their work. The anthemic "God Gave Rock & Roll To You" is worth the price of the collection alone. I found myself singing it for weeks and there are many other gems here too. Now kicking myself for not discovering them sooner - don't make the same mistake people!!
