Good learning books for homeschooling
My son is homeschooled so I was pretty happy with this book and its variety of things to do as experiments.

Very nice science activity book for grades K-1, lacking content depth for 2nd grade.
For a K-1 student, this is a great science book to buy. A good variety of topics are covered, there are child-engaging black and white illustrations, and the paper is of an unusually heavy quality. However, most of the science content and the reading level is too simple for most 2nd graders. Some exercises are first grade appropriate: reading sentences and matching them to illustrations to sequence the actions of a bee, labeling the life-cycle of a butterfly, and simple and simple yet fun chemistry experiments. However, other exercises: circling which animals live in the grass lands, coloring which animals live in a pond habitat, or matching which items of only 4 different types of scientists would study, are content appropriate for Kindergarten. A few activities from the anatomy section may be 2nd grade appropriate, yet would also be fine for a first grade level student. The majority of activities in the book would be more appropriately labeled for grades K-1. Our almost-6 year old home-schools using grade 1 (almost finished) mixed with grade 2 level work books from a variety of companies. She reads mostly unassisted, and writes comfortably when seeing the words. We have watched and read Magic School bus videos and books for over 2 years, using a variety of science work books and reinforcement activities like making detailed eyeballs with Styrofoam balls (see Scholastic activities site), and drawing her outline on long art paper then filling it in with the organs (great learning and a fun keep-sake!). The concepts shared in the exercises in this book are lacking in detail compared to the depth addressed in the same topics by Magic School Bus videos and reading. Our daughter enjoys many of the topics in this book, thus it would be worthwhile to see if DK publishes a 3rd grade level content that is as diverse and visually appealing, yet more in-depth so it could be used to re-enforce learning from the Magic School Bus series which has provided our child with a love of science.

Great supplemental information
These are great books for supplemental information/help while homeschooling or just when your child is having some difficulties. They are not stand alone work books but are very helpful.

Works well
I don't necessarily have an issue with the information inside the book, however I feel it's mislabeled. We bought this for my daughter who is in kindergarten and she has no problem with it. I think this would be better labeled for first grade. (I should add that my daughter is slightly more advanced than others her age, doing first and second grade work. This is comparing to children in our local school)Also, it will need to have some side work done as well. We homeschool so this was a good guide for us but I don't think this should be used as a sole source of information. It will need an adult to fill in and elaborate on topics. All and all, it isn't a bad book for the price and I would happily buy from this company again but I will also read reviews carefully from others and see the age group they are purchasing for and level of education.

Worth the Money
Purchased for my six-year-old son who is going into second grade. He loves the experiments, and I love that each page is filled with topics I wouldn't even think to cover. I like also how the pictures are blank. My son loves coloring the pictures after he's completed the lesson. Definitely requires an adult to read as there are large words like "coniferous" featured throughout. It's really impressive hearing my six-year-old point out botanists and chemists on TV because he learned it from this book, or describing the pollination process. I'm happy with my purchase, and so is he.

Buy it, you won't regret it! These are Excellent!
These DK Workbooks are simply excellent. They have a full page of gold stickers to help keep our son motivated for each lesson. They have large lettering that is easy to read, and appropriate for a 2nd grade level. My son likes to do these on his own and at his own pace with the easy-to-follow directions for each lesson. We have purchased every DK Workbook for 1st and 2nd grade now. Highly recommended to bridge the school break over the summer. Buy them for your child, you won't regret it, and they will thank you later! These books also meet the common core state standards. You might think I work for DK workbooks with how much I have raved about them - I only want to get the word out how good these are and hope they keep making them for higher grades.

Easy, but fun
I home school my 7 year old daughter with a first grade curriculum. My daughter likes this work book because of the gold stars AND because it is EASY! I agree with the other reviewers of these titles that these books are below grade level. We are on page 9 or 10 of the second grade science workbook and have covered things like pollination, insect body parts and the definition of a conifer. I mean, this is stuff I covered years ago on nature walks with my kids. On page 30, more than half way though there are questions like "what happens to chocolate when it melts. What happens to toast in the toaster?". Page 46, the second to last page: "A pond is a small body of fresh water". And then the child writes "Duck" and "Fish" under a picture of the animal. I think you you spend ANY time with your children, this book is superfluous. However, this book does get my daughter to sit down without complaint to do other harder (in her opinion) stuff like math, so I can't say I dislike it too much!

Makes Science interesting.. Kindles self learning...
My daughter liked this book. She started working on it right away. Most of the activities are self explanatory for children. Less theory.. More self learning.
